cleaned new gun for first time

I just cleaned my new gun for the first time with a rod and patch and about half way through the barrel there was a lot of resistance and had to use alot of force to puch the rod through? was wondering if this is normal of if maybe it could have damaged my rifling? it wasnt a brass rod it was a carbon looking one and when i pulled it out the end of it was a little bent so i threw it away. just wodering if i could have done any damage?

WV your patch may have been a bit too large. You want it snug but not too tight. Next time try trimming your patches. Start small and work your way up until you get the size that glides through the bore using a firm even pressure. Oh, and be sure to use a wet patch first. Obvious for some but not everyone - right BC?
And if you don't have one already, when you go to your gun shop, get yourself a bore guide.

It could have been a rough spot in the bore. Many factory barrels can be quite rough until broken in by either firing or hand lapping.

Did it ever occur to you to look down the bore with a bore light to see if you can see anything?

Also check patch size as mentioned above.

Rod damage is cumulative, it is unlikely 1 stroke will dammagea barrel, byt 10 may. Since your rifle is new, you might as wellgeto off on the right foot, Buy a good rod and a bore guide and dont look back.
If you have a .270 or bigger, get the ,277 or larger rod.

Yes, cleaned the gun before shooting, and also cut the patches to 1 1/2x1 1/2 as recomended for this caliber. the local gun shop says its prety common for a new gun because of burs on the rifling.
