[/quote] Uncle Matt, Try to pay attention this time..... I never "count my chickens" first. I've been deer hunting for 37 years. I shoot my slug guns through out the year testing different slugs. It's called cofidence when you pull the trigger....

Whew! I'll work on some of thatcofidence stuff. Never heard of it before but I am willing to try.
But seriously, the way you word it it does sound like you just put that CA POS scope on it AFTR taking it out of retirement - therefore the chicken & eggs comment.
CA POS scope? Ha!

I have read all opinions, and agree with all. It depends on what ammo you are using. The standard fostor slug is good to 75 yrd. The Brenneke slug is good to about 125 yrd. The lead is a lot harder. At 200 yrds though it will drop 32'' in a smooth bore. Now the Hornady SST high velocity is good to 200 yrd's plus, under near perfect conditions. In Iowa's 2005 season a hunter shot a buck at 242 yrd's, one shot in the neck and he dropped. But most deer are taken less than 50 yrds. My farthest was 38.closest was 15. I hunt with a Mossberg.

A 500 is a cheap gun and I believe, through experience with the 500 I have shot (my buddy's), I wouldn't (with any ammo) attempt a shot over 125 yards no matter how confident you are.after allit is a shotgun....not a rifle. as an avid bowhunter i say, get in closer! good luck.

I have the same gun from a couple years ago and it was almost $400 back then, I do know for sure it is very effective from about 15 yards, with brenneke sabot shells. that's how I took my buck last season. Why people take such long shots is beyond me. Bowhunt for awhile it will teach you patience and give you practice at getting up close. I would say like the rest of them 100 yards maybe even 125 it would probably be ok, although might have some drop to compensate for. I've only probably target shot mine at around 50 yards or so and it was still pretty dead on the scope at that range. If you want to take a couple hundred yard shots get a rifle, not a 12 gauge. 250 is cheap too, because if it is the one in the d i c ks ad it comes with a slug and a bird barrel, and a halfway decent scope too.

That may very well be. But I've had mine for over 20 years and never a problem. Taken more deer with it than my 1187 and 870 combined. And I dearly love those two guns too

I'd go even cheaper. I bought a Maverick at Walmart, made by Mossberg and it's the same gun as the 500 and accepts all 500 barrels, etc. The only difference is the safety, it feels a little cheaper and I think the internals on the slide are a little different. Odd thing is, my turkey was just as dead as the guy I know who shot his with a $1500 Benelli.
