bore snake?

I have a new england .270 and was wondering if these bore snakes are good for cleaning these single shots? also was wondering if i should just use gun oil or solvent?

I use them on everything. I spray some solvent down the barrel and on the snake. Make sure you get the Bore Snake brand, I think the "brush" is better on them.

I am a huge fan of the Bore-snake. Though, it is an excellent tool for quick cleanings after almost all shooting days. NOTHING beats the good old fashoned 1 peice cleanig rod, brushes, patches, and cleaning solvent of choice for the in depth cleaning.

I love mine too. It works pretty darned good and quick and easy to boot. Just use a drop or two of oil on it for the final pull through.

It's o.k. for a good quick clean or run through after going on a hunt that I didn't shoot my gun on. But I would stick with a brush and patch job to really get the fouling out. It seems to help when using it with a brush and patches. But as for using it as your only cleaning tool. Nope. I've run mine through too many times to follow it with a patch and still see a ton of fouling come out.

I did not like the bore snake. It did not seem any better than a regular cleaning kit, less verstile. Get the rope full of oil and messy. Be ok for a quick stroke in a field situation, but don't know when I would need that. Clean while shooting change point of impact?Save that money, spend on good cleaning kit and informative book on similar subjects.

If you shoot much you will need a copper solvent in your cleaning kit, you will see arguements on how to use, but for myselfI clean with copper solvent very often.

quick note on maintenece f your bore snake. An easy way to clean it it to put it in a sock, tie off the end of the sock in a knot, and throw it in the washing maching.

as far as a good cleaning kit. Spend the little bit extra and buy a 1 piece, composite cleaning rod. If the rifle is a bolt action, get a bore guide too. Jus t acouple dollars. the 1 peice rod saves scratches on the barrel where a segmented metal rod can unscrew and do the damage. The bore guide just keeps the rod straight down the barrel, also helping protect it from un-needed wear and tear.
