I would go for the 270WSM and not look back.It will do anything the 25-06 will do and allow for heavier bullets also.Plus they are just the neatest short mag out there.

All the chrono info I' ve had access to and what others have posted on forums has confirmed the WSM' s are right where they claim to be in velocity.They wern' t designed to compete with longer action mags and whether they are " better" or not is a moot point.They were designed to provide magnum like ballistics in a short action cartridge which they do quite well.Look for them to continue to sell well and development on new calibers to continue long after all the hoopla is over.I liked my 300WSM so much I sold my 308 and made it my 30 caliber of choice.Now to get a 270WSM and complete the line-up.

woodseye from what ive seen others post who own chronographs they velecoties are correct and most have had no loading problems. I personaly cant wait to get my hands on the 270 wsm when money allows the new rifle.

Now a 257wsm would probably be as good a deer rifle as you could get.It would also be a great sheep rifle.On the other hand I have never been fond of any .270 as it is just to close to the 7mm bore which I believe to be a more versatile caliber if larger game such as moose and elk are on the menu.

Why carry the extra weight of a magnum rifle? In the same make and brand rifle the 270WSM short action will weigh in at 1/4# lighter than the same long action gun in 25-06.Looks more like why carry the extra weight of the non-magnum rifle?

Otis,I relate from a Savage point of view and they use 24" barrels in short mags.The difference in the savage guns weight between long and short action is 1/4#-1# lighter depending on barrel length.And this is with the short action having a 2" longer and heavier taper barrel.This allows me to carry a short action mag with 24" barrel and save weight from a long action gun with a 22" barrel.Might not be the same in Browning but in Savage you can take advantage of what the short action weight savings is all about.I just weighed a long action savage and a short action and got 1/2# difference in favor of the short all other things equal.Guess I' m just a short action shooter at heart as I would like to get a 270WSM as my next purchase but would never consider a 25-06 for some reason.With the 27 caliber you can come down to 100gr but go up to 150 and that spells versatility to me for varmints to elk.Not trying to be argumentative only stating the facts as they apply to me and the guns I use:)
