Hornady 270 ammo
 

I was recently given a new .270 and Saturday will be my first real hunt with it. I bought some Hornady 140 gr/ Boattail Softpoints to hunt with, but shortly after buying them I did some research and found out that the .270 was built around the 130 gr. bullet. They shoot paper good out of my rifle and I will use the rest of the box but I was just wondering how they did on game.

Has anyone had any experiance with this ammo or should I change over to 130 gr. Federal Sierra Gamekings?

130 vs 140 grain? The deer won't know the difference. If the Hornadys shoot good out of your, why switch?

Yeah, load some up and try it out. A .270 will group well with 130-150 grain bullets, anything heavier than 150 though and the groups really start opening up. I just loaded some 140 gr. Nosler ballistic tips and they shot real nice, so did the Speer spbt's in 150gr. though. I know from experience that the 130gr bullets work real well on deer, the only thing that I dont really like though is how big the exit wounds tend to be when shot under 75 yards. But that is to be expected with any bullet traveling at or near 3000 fps.

If you are limited to using factory ammo, and those 140-grainers shoot well for you in your rifle, make a note of the ammo lot number (usually printed on the flap of the box somewhere) and go back to the store where you bought those, and buy as many boxes of THAT SAME LOT OF AMMO as you can afford/find!

Finding factory ammo that shoots well in a given rifle can often be a drill in futility. If you can avoid such a search, do so!

The 140-grain bullet is a good compromise between the 130 and 150-grain bullet in the .270, and should work well for both deer and black bear shooting. For elk and moose, I personally would use a 150-grain Nosler Partition. But I load my own ammo, also.......

If they shoot well out of your rifle why change. I've found Hornady Custom and Federal premium fodder is great stuff and unlike Winchester and Remingtonkeeps the same groupsfrom lot to lot.
