I agree dan but my point being that what can the 300 do (regarding elk, moose,or big bear) that the 338 won't do even better? The .270 is pretty close to my .280 and .284,so I don't see going up to .300 as a big enough step.

I am sorry guys I think I missed something here.A .300wm has 500 to 600 ftlbs on a .270win,so how is that not better? and with a 50gr bigger bullet.I have had a .270win for 25 years and a .300 wm for 20 years and I can see a distinct difference between them.On the range and in the field.

I would agree w/stalkingbear in that the 338 is equal in the lighter loads (180) but has the ability to shoot heavier loads. When I went through this, I was down to a 300 WSM vs 338 WM for an elk only caliber. I opt for the 300WM because: 1) lighter factory rifle, 2) smaller throw 3) New technology 4) slightly less recoil, and 5) the killer, I had to have a Sako finnlight. This being said, if you can find a rifle that truley fits you first, either caliber will work. If you need something w/ a bit more power (big bears) the 338 would get the nod.

I agree with the .338wm I guess I couldnt see the .270 in the class with a .300wm.That is a jump up for sure.

I am going out west(not this year) to go after Elk and Mule Deer. I am looking at getting one of three rifles in one of two calibres.

rifles: Tikka T3(in either laminate stainless or wood blued)
Browning A-Bolt in Stainless synthetic(new camo stock)
Remington Mountain Rifle Stainless synthetic

Calibres: 300 WM, 325

I was wondering what you all thought of these rifles in those two cartridges or if you had any suggestions of your own. My current whitetail rifle is a Winchester 70 featherweight in .270. I know i could load it hotter for elk and it'll drop mulies fine. However I wanted something that shot hotter and was thinking 300 in a 165 grain bullet? If this should have been two seperate posts forgive me, new to the forums.
Your Mod 70 Featherweight is absolutly perfect for western hunting......
Probably better than any of the suggestions you made...
But mind I perfer control round feeding..If I had to suggest any other gun manufacturer it would be Kimber.....
As far as the cals go, just about any .270 7mm 30 cal would do..
They are all flat shooting out to 400yrds with virtually no holdover and pack plenty of punch tokill an elk at that distance..
If a long range rifle is what you want, go with a .300wsm they are inherenltly accurate right upthere with the .308 yet will give you that extra power even farther out to 550 600yrds..
The power is there with alot of magnums to kill at long distance you just need to practice shot placement......

First off, your .270 will work fine, but if you are set on gettign a new gun all three you mentioned are great. I would personally prefer the Tika or Rem though.

As far as the calibre, I would go with the 300WM. There is a greater variety of ammo and the .325 would be a bit much for mulies. I would look at the 300WSM as well, that would be my #1 choice.
