Anybody have a Ruger No.1? I'm thinking about buying one & wanted some opinions.How well do they shoot ect. Thanks

You'll love the appearance of your ruger #1.....plan on a couple hundred bucks accurizing it after you buy it!!!

Their standard of accuracy of even a varmint model is 3" at 100 yards!

Vapodog, I like Rugers but I will agree that you have to spend some cash tweeking them in.

I knew a fellow that had a wildcat 243/06 in a big heavy bolt gun. He wanted the same cartridge in a lighter handier gun so he bought a Ruger #1 in 25/06 with plans to rebarrel it. He took it to the range to shoot it some and liked the accuracy of it so much he left it a .25 cal. and still hunts with it to this day. I believe his son bought one in .270 win. awhile after his dad started using the 25/06.

I have 2 of them a 1b in 280 and a 1s in 45/70. No I have not spent a couple of hundred dollars tweaking each one , in fact I spent 15 dollars on the 1b free floating the barrel with acraglass gel. The 280 shoots 1- 1 1/2 groups with some handloads I had hanging around from my last 280 bolt rifle and the trigger is pretty heavy 5lbs, there is a lot of room for improvement when I get around to making up some more loads for it and getting the trigger down to 3 1/2 or so. The 45/70 is a sweet rifle...beautiful wood and a 3 3/4 lb trigger from the factory and using 300 grain winchester hollowpoints shoots nice cloverleafs.

I used to have a 1A in 7mm Mauser... I loved it. It would shoot 1 1/2" groups regularly. I'm sure if I had known about the forend hanger modification, and floating the forend, etc.. it would probably have done much better. Aesthetically, it was wonderful. A classic, graceful rifle, with really nicely figured wood on it. In my more youthful ignorance and desire for "something different" I traded it off.... not a good decision. If I had the money, I'd get another in a heartbeat. Probably one of the stainless ones...

Hornetguy, what is the forend hanger modification your talking about? I plan on buying a stainless 7mm. Having the barrel glass bead blasted to take the heavy shine off($65.00) free floating or bedding the barrel($70.00) & setting the trigger @ 2lbs.($10.00. My Ruger bolt in 7mm shoots 3/8" groups off the bags, can I expect this kind of accuracy from a No.1?

I used to shoot 1/2 to 1 1/2 inch groups with my no.1b. No modifications at all, just handloads. I sold it and now have the no 1 varmiter in the stainless laminate. Haven't had a lot of time to play with it yet but the first load I tried was 1 and 1/2 inch group off the box of a pickup. I will get to the range one day for some real fun. I believe the mod is a simple rubber o ring acting as a washer on the forearm. This should "float" the barrel a little.

Last year I traded a rifle for a S/S w/Laminated stock Ruger #1 in 45/70. Before trading I met the guy at the range and took a couple shots with it. I hit a little low, the shots were about .75" apart.He hadn't modified the rifle but handloaded several different loads until he found the right one.All the Ruger #1's I've ever seen have been very accurate.A great single shot,at a reasonable price.

my dad had one..im not sure if it was a diffrent model or what but it was a tiny little guy and weighed next to nothing...i would killed to carry that into the woods...he shooots a deer with it and says he doesnt like it and sells it..he got a steal on it too..350 for it used but in perfect condition with a redfield scope..he said he didnt like it! the shot he made was dam near imposible with a full sized rifle..he had a turn completly around and coulndt move his legs too far so had to move his upper body and this is inbetween saplings a stuff a full sized barrel would hit easy...and he makes a shot like that..it was a great shot being able to turn like that...and it was so light thats enough of a reason for me to buy one...we walk 2 miles to our deer spot...my 10+lb mausers a killer on that walk my shoulders besides deer!....i dont know what he was thinking..i never shot it but was there when he did..it was in 3006..at 50 it held a ok group but he isnt a great rifle shooter for some reason..but his pistol shooting is up there with some of the best...i never understood that...but thats how it is..im sure it would shot better than 2 inches at 50...ive seen him shoot rifles alot and none group better..he doetn care..he says if he can hit a paper plate at 50 he can kill a deer..he does so i guess i cant justify making him shoot tight groups...o well..if i didnt love the mauser id get a no1....maybe i still will if i can find one in SS.....i need an "all weahter rifle" pretty bad im 15 and look for excuses to buy new guns!!!
