quality manufacturers

I've been buying guns since 1964 and have formed a few opinions about quality and products. I want to be careful about separating appearance and quality.....quality means accurate, function, reliability......not fit or finish. Ugly can be quality in my life as long as it works.

I've bought several guns from several companys that was pure junk.....and I think it's right that we have the right to vent our complaints here.

I have two thumbs down for the following companys

Savage
EMF
Ruger
Weatherby

What's your feelings???

I would have to disagree with you on Ruger, I own a couple of them & would'nt trade them for anything. They have one of the strongest bolts on the market,& the strongest mounting system on the market. Now I did have some after market work done to them but I'm real happy with them.I think the newer Remingtons are junk, thier extractor on thier bolts just plain suck.

Hmmm very interesting observation VAPODOG ...I have owned/own Weatherbys and Rugers and you can also add Winchester,Sako, Browning to that list..never had a minimal problem with them at all and there have been many.

Interesting in that Remington is not on your list. <BLOCKQUOTE id=quote<font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>I want to be careful about separating appearance and quality.....quality means accurate, function, reliability......not fit or finish. How many of the guns you have listed as 2 thumbs down have you owned and what kind of problems have you experienced? What kind of guns do you give a thumbs up to.?

OK guys, lets take it one step at a time.....first EMF
I've only bought two guns from them.....both .45LC premier handguns.....very pretty guns.....both required such repairs as replacement of &quot;bolts&quot; and on one gun the barrel unscrewed in my hands.....the barrel was not tight at all!! I fought with them for months trying to get repairs done.....sorry....the list a grievances was way too many to remember.....what a bunch of turkeys!!!

Savage....careful now....the grievances go back many years... I bought a fox deluxe side by side 12 Ga. I had to return it because there was an interferrence in one extractor that caused the left barrel to not eject the spent shell. Savage fixed it and returned it....then the safety didn't work....Savege fixed it and returned it to me.....then the right side trigger failed to work, Savage fixed it and returned it to me.....then the ventillated rib broke lose from the receiver.....I about sh!t....at my request they replaced the shotgun with a M-99 .308....and that thing had many problems as well.....I finally sawed it in half and trashed it and bought a M-70 Winchester!!! Many years later A friend bought a 110 left hand .223.....shot fabulously.....horrible trigger so he sent it back and then the safety didn't work,.......in the end he wound up with a singleshot with no safety......ok for a prairiedog shooter!!!

I've owned three Rugers....a M77 .243....stock warped so bad that it wouldn't hold 4&quot; groups.....one Mini14 had 11 pound triggerpull and wouldn't shoot inside a 10&quot; pie plate at 100 yards.....and an other M77 7 Mag that would't feed shells up from the Magazine.....

Three Weatherby .22 rimfires that misfired more than you can believe and a M-V that had several problems.....finish cracked to heck and I couldn't reload ammo for it.....RCBS confirmed that the chamber in the MarkV was wrong.....

No offense vapodog, but you sound like the jinx of all jinxes on guns! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Talk about a string of bad luck. I think every company puts out a lemon now and then. Even if its one in a million, if you've got that one it definitely puts you off their brand, perhaps for life. That you've been unlucky so many times makes me think that the gunpowder gods are angry with you.

Tell us, what guns would you put in the two thumbs up category?

I can say about EMF and don't have a complaint about Ruger or Savage (I agree the Savage's are kinda ugly, but they shoot good and are reliable) But I can say the early Weatherby MKV's had a design flaw in the stock ,that caused them to crack in the wrist of the stock. They've remedied the trouble on their newer rifles and have improved their customer service. That said ,they turned me off thier products in the very early 80's when they didn't stand behind thier screw up. I had 2 300's that cracked and personally saw another 5 that developed cracks in the same spot and ran into more than a few hunters on trips to Wyoming that had experienced the same trouble.

You put ruger on your list but not remington? Something wrong with you....

Yes, all companies come out with lemons. Remington more than others.

Over the years I've had my share of defects. Not with one manufacturer but several. Smith&Wesson,Ithaca,Colt,Browning and Yes Ruger a few times. Some were cosmetic and others were plain defects. In fact my one Browning BAR &quot;Stalker&quot; was sent off yesterday. The metal insert for mounting the scope base is stripped or defective. The BAR hasn't even been fired yet and problems.A few years back I had a new BAR Safari II, Blotches in the bluing.Once I bought a new Colt Diamondback. Looked good at the store.Removed the cosmo(grease)coating when I got home with it.It looked like the gun had been dragged on the floor before shipping. Colt replaced the gun.S&W Model 29 front sight blade crooked,Smith replaced the barrel.Ruger Redhawk shooting way left, rear sight all the way to right. Ruger replaced barrel, cylinder and other misc parts.Ruger SRH, Scope rings making bad cuts in mounting rail. Defective cut outs for rings.Ruger replaced with new gun.No matter who makes it,sooner or later a defective piece will slip through.Thankfully in most cases these companies will stand behind their products.

interesting.....I've had no trouble with Remingtons because I've not bought any Remingtons....

Guns that I dearly love are SKB, Citori, M-70, Marlin, Mossberg

Interesting....there's no correlation with price and quality here!!!

I would not in any way consider savage to be low quality firearms. Name anyone who has had one that has malfunctioned or failed to shoot well. My guess is that they are few and far between. There are quite a few that I consider to be low quality, Ruger tops my list. They look nice but don't shoot well at all. Quilly may dislike it, but browning is near the top of my list of non desirable firearms. Their quality is ok (due to their japanese manufacture), but their design, engineering and metallurgy is strictly second rate. Talk about poorly engineered crap. Give me a M70 or a mauser any day, there's nothing browning makes other than their over/unders that I would allow in my gun safe.

If the gun does not have correct fit it is never ever going to shoot consistently despite design differences so fit does mean something. I have to disagree with you on Ruger and Weatherby...I have only returned one to the factory it was the lightweight in 270 and I recieved a brand new one back since there was a manufacturing problem with it. This took one month time as a result of this experience I would rate Weatherbys customer service as excellent. I bought a used number 1 a few years back and there were some marks on the breechblock that did not belong there...it was returned to ruger and it came back in 2 weeks ...new breechblock and no charge. Now if you want a real piece of overpriced crap buy a Remington...just about everyone including custom shop rifles have had to be returned. In fact I have bought exactly 11 of these things and returned 6 to Remington or their local authorized repair center. Now isn't that a track record they can be proud of.

Other than a hefty trigger pull on my savage I have no other complaints, that thing can shoot. I've had one minor, minor defect problem with a ruger and they fixed it asap.

I have a Remington 700 30.06 that i bought 12 years ago and it has performed flawless and taken many deer. It shoots just as good now as it did then and was very accurate out of the box and still is. It shoots 1/2&quot; groups all day as long as i do my part. Like i said it's been flawless. I also have a Savage that i bought before i bought the Remington so it's older than 12 years and it's also a shooter. I agree it's not the best looking rifle i have but the gun has always been flawless and is also very accurate. I just bought a H&R single shot in 25.06 caliber and for the price it's also a good gun. It didn't group well at first but i had a trigger job done on it and am in the process of working up a load for it now. The gun looks good and feels nice when i shoulder it. I can't say anything about Browning or the others because i've never owned them but i have a couple of friends who swear by them. I think you can get a lemon in anything you buy so I guess i was lucky and got a couple of the good ones when i bought my guns.

I must admit that I see progress at Ruger...their single action revolvers seem to be fine, their 10/22 seems to be fine and their .22 semiauto pistol seems to be fine....

I bought a gold hunter from browning that I didn't like.....it's the only gun I ever bought from Browning that I was disappointed with...
