.260 rem
Right now I hunt with a 30-30 marlin and a 44 mag ruger deerfield. For my next rifle, I am leaning towards a bolt-action .308, my main reasons are the versatility and endless options and availability in ammo. However, I have always been one to buy something "different" Which leads me to consider the 260 or even the 7mm-08. I really like the ballistics of these two calibers and I will 99% of the time be hunting Minnesota white tails with the off-chance of going out west for Muley's. How has ammo availabilty been for those who own this chamber? I won't be reloading for a while so for right know thats not an option.
Thanks,
Camp

First of all, both numbers are perfect for whitetails and muleys. You can't find better deer rounds, period.
In terms of ammo availability, the 7mm-08 will be a bit better now, since it is actually quite popular and doesn't really fit into the "different" category anymore. The .260 isn't far behind, though, and you'll find plenty of good factory loads to choose from in both. I think it will become popular, too, so there will be evn more loads in the future. Go with 120-140gr bullets, with 120-130gr being about right for deer-sized game.
I am a huge 6.5mm fan, having killed many types of game with various cartridges chambered for it. I would say get the .260 Rem without hesitation: Hardly any recoil and absolutely deadly on deer. Still a little "different," too.

The .260, the 7-08 and the .308 are all superb deer cartridges.....any of them will serve you nicely.
My personal preference would be the .260 but I've never left home without about 50 rounds of ammo and have never run out!!
.308 ammo is almost as available as .270 or .30-06 but I wouldn't let availability stop me from buying a .260.....just don't forget to pack ammo on that next hunt. Keep about 40 rounds in stock!!!!

camp_13...I have all 3 calibers in the Remingtom Model Seven and are great! The .260 in my opinion is too much like a .243,not much advantage. I perfer the 7mm-08 over the others because the bullet choice is better..(I reload)and less recoil than a .308. Factory ammo??? The .308 would be the first pick and the 7mm-08 would be my second pick as far as the .260,little choice of availabilty would be my concern! But thats just my $.02...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: .260 rem
I have a friend with a 260 and that gun flat out-performs my 270 with remington factory loads. Out performs meaning his bullets seem to deliver more energy "on target" than my 270 which seems more likely to just blow through or over kill. Less kick too although the 270 is pretty mild.

I have both a 260 and 270 that I use for hunting whitetails .Both are efficient deer harvesters .I was amazed to find how similiar the ballistics are between the two calibers when shooting a 140 grain bullet .The 6.5 mm bullet of the 260 has a sectional density of 0.287 while the same grain 270 bullet is 0.261.The recoil of the 260 is noticable less (although the 270 isn't bad).I purchased a 260 A Bolt 2 years ago and love it .I actually prefer it over my 270 but so does my 10 year old son.Does anybody know why Browning no longer advertises an A Bolt in the 260 caliber on their official website?

308 is a very good deer caliber.
the 260 is close to the 243.good but not that much punch.
7mm08 is a step up from the 260,but two steps down from
the 308.it is hard to beat a 30 caliber on deer.
don't get me wrong i have 260 AND i LOVE IT.
but you have to pick your shots.
