What slugs with Mossberg ?
I've got a Mossberg 500 pump with a 20" barrel. I'm going to try a variety of rifled slugs to see which patterns best. Although I know my range will be limited without a rifled barrel, I was wondering if anyone has a Mossberg 500 and has had good experience with a particular rifled slug.

RE: What slugs with Mossberg ?
Yea I do and them new winchester partion gold slugs do a awesome job.but they are expensive.

RE: What slugs with Mossberg ?
I have not shot a lot of different types, but I have always had great succes with the Remington Coppersolid Sabot slugs. They group very well for me, and I also owned the same Mossberg 500 at one time, which is what I was shooting them out of.

RE: What slugs with Mossberg ?
i use winchester slugs. group well and knock 'em down good.

RE: What slugs with Mossberg ?
Do just what you said and try different ones. I've got a 500 with a smooth bore slug barrel and you will be suprised at the range it's accurate to. I've been using standard 3" remington sluggers. I'm going to do some testing this summer with different ones though, going to try the Activ slugs, I've seen some pretty good things with them.

RE: What slugs with Mossberg ?
I tried both the rem. sluggers and winchester
slugs at the range this year with my 500 and found Winchester did group a little better. |
RE: What slugs with Mossberg ?
I have a cylinder bore (it's really a tactical "blow holes in your home-intruder" gun). Do you think this lack of any choke would affect my range?
And although I am going to experiment at different distances, what kind of range do you think I could expect, assuming I don't like any groups over 6". Keep 'em all in the Bull. Edited by - bulzeye on 01/17/2002 17:30:14 |

i've got a 500 with a 24" smoothbore slug barrel, and I get great results with winchester 2 3/4" slugs

Quilly,
I have a cylinder bore and can't change it without getting a new barrel. 50 yards would be good enough for me. I'm used to bowhunting anyway, so I'm used to having limited range. Since I hunt the thick stuff, it won't be a big deal. I didn't know you could shoot slugs through a full choke. Thanks everybody. If anybody else has input, let me know. I'm particularly interested to hear if you have tried different types yourself and found one slug to be better in your gun. Keep 'em all in the Bull. Edited by - bulzeye on 01/18/2002 07:25:04 |

Bulzeye,
"I didn't know that you could shoot slugs through a full choke" that is the fastest way to get hurt!!! |
RE: What slugs with Mossberg ?
Ditto on the Brenneke slugs.
We've used them, short range, on hogs out of my smooth bore Mossberg 500 20ga and none of them boogers have complained yet! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> For grins, I've shot them out to 50yds and accuracy is good, at least to that point. |
RE: What slugs with Mossberg ?
I've hunted deer in Ohio with a 500 a few times. Mine likes the cheap Win 2 3/4" slugs. I feel very confident to 75 yards and even a little longer in the proper situation.

RE: What slugs with Mossberg ?
Someone please tell me if I am wrong here, but aren't sabot slugs practically worthless on a smoothbore gun? Seems to me that the sabot's sole purpose in life is to catch the bore's rifling and impart that spin to the slug itself.
Therefore wouldn't no rifling = no spin on a sabot slug? In essence, launching a 3/4oz lead knuckleball downrange? |
RE: What slugs with Mossberg ?
Theoretically Whiz, that is correct. A sabot makes no sense in a smoothebore. It is virtually pointless. I have heard guys say that they shoot well out of some smoothebores...but don't know that firsthand.

RE: What slugs with Mossberg ?
Quilly, I have never shot slugs out of a choke as tight as a full choke. What I said was only what I have heard. So, being comepletely serious, if you have done it, then I will believe you.

I know, but being somewhat new here, I will ALWAYS respect the more expirienced(?) posters here

RE: What slugs with Mossberg ?
Bulzeye,
I have found that my best shooting smoothbore barrel is my "improved cylinder". I am not a shotgun expert at al, and don't know if a "cylinder bore" is the same as an "improved cylinder" but for smoothbores my "improved cylinder" does best. As for which slug will fly best from your smoothbore......test, test, test. |
RE: What slugs with Mossberg ?
Guys you better read your owners manuals.
Remington & mossberg say that you should not shoot slugs through a full choke. 1. full choke is smaller than a slug BOOM no choke or end of barrel. 2. If it don't go BOOM the choke will move & expand so it is no longer a full choke. Mossberg says that for no reason should any body shoot slugs through a model 835 mag. Some of this is only what I have read. Not what I know for sure. Hunting is nature. It is our nature to hunt. I'm not a hunting fanatic just a hunting addict. |
RE: What slugs with Mossberg ?
Thanks for all the great info so far!
I'm always amazed how much valuable experience there is to be shared in forums like this. Anybody else got a favorite rifled slug for their 500? Keep 'em all in the Bull. |
