RE: Gun Recoil

Regarding your question on the pad, I use a PAST shooting pad when at the range. It helps out a bit. http://www.battenfeldtechnologies.com/pastshooting/

You could also have a pad installed on the gun. A couple of options are the Kickeze pad http://www.kickeez.net/ or a Pachmayr pad http://www.lymanproducts.com/pachmayr/index.htm

Here's a little something interesting to read regarding muzzle brakes http://members.tripod.com/~Rbertalot...le/muzzle.html i came across on another forum. They seemed to think highly of the Vias muzzle break. http://www.muzzlebrakes.com/index.html

Sorry to be so link happy.

RE: Gun Recoil

You might want to check on a Sims recoil pad I ordered one for my 30/06 Mtn rifle but at that time they didn't have one to fit, said it would be later. It probably would be cheaper and better than any porting.Don't quote me on the % of recoil drop but I think I saw about 70% just don't remember.

RE: Gun Recoil

If you put like 1 ear plug in your left ear (unless you are left handed) it would be fine. You can normaly stick 1 plug in pretty quickly.I shot a 270 with a muzzle brake and it was WAY too loud. You're shoulder would be fine, but you wouldn't be able to hear much for at least a few days. I injured my shoulder a few years ago, and I just suck with my 30-30 that year.

RE: Gun Recoil

Gentry, Vais, KDF, or even magnaport are all going to reduce recoil significantly. And I understand this reason for wanting one with the shoulder and all. From what I have seen, the Vais is probably the most effectective and the magnaport the least effective.

But think about this for a moment. Maybe when practicing, use a nice real thick pact recoil shoulder pad. Then when out west, you probably won't be shooting more than a handful of shots, and that shouldn't affect your shoulder. I figured the hunt alone would be more irriatating to a shoulder than those shots. Reason I say this, is I had an accumark with a break. Everyone hated to shoot by me at the range. I mean its hard to consentrate with the percussion alone, never mind the noise. And if not machined perfectly, it can make your gun less accurate. When I started shooting magnums, I thought I needed the breaks. But over a few years, I learned how to shoot without one accurately. But either way I understand why you want it. Just don't want you to do something you will regret.
