Thoughts on a .280 Remington on elk and large black bear.

I'm sure a seasoned & experience hunter can use iton elk and black bear. I would choose a .30-06 over a .280 cause of the .30-06ammo selection available...

Agreed.

That being said, the .280 will work just fine for the stated purposes (with a properly selected bullet, and good shot placement).

Didn't Jack O'Conner kill 18 elk and a moose or two with a .270????

I would think a .280 would do fine....

I have the 280 win. in a Browning A-bolt, and have never had to take more than one shot (140gr. Nosler Partition) on any of the elk I've taken. I would not hesitate to use it on Black Bear.

Do you reload your own ammo? If yes, then you have a lot of choices in 7mm bullets. If no, 30-06 is probably a better choice.

In 1999 I went on my first bear hunt in the upper peninsula of Michigan. At that time i only owned one rifle, a Remington 700 mountain rifle in .280 Rem. I shot my bear at 60 yards. The bullet broke both shoulders and the bear ran/crawled about 10 yards. Looking back on that hunt I think I would have chosen a more durable bullet. I was using a 140 gr. ballistic tip! What was I thinking??? oh well, luckily it worked and the bear is now hanging on my living room wall. So yes I would not hesitate to reccomend the .280 for black bear. The ballistics for a .280 are similar to that of a 7mm Rem. magnum, without all the recoil. I don't think anyone would ever question using a 7 mag for bear. Happy hunting, Bricat

Yup, look at the ballistics & you'll see the 280 Rem out performs the 30.06 all the way across the board until the the .06 is loaded w/ 180 gr. bullets. I used a Ruger #1 for yearson Deer, Elk & Bear, the 160/162gr bullets are your best bet for trajectory & energy. No worries
