It is a 30-06 necked up to drop bigger critters. Should be real hard on deer.

Its enough gun for about anything in NA. It will shoot a 250 grain bullet up to 2550 fps. Only about 200 fps behind the 338 Win Mag. know a guy that has whacked a bunch of Grizzly bears with the old Whelen.

Just finished rebarreling a savage 110 to a 35 whelen. I've shotabout 30 rounds through itwith 220 gr speers and rl15 at about 2650 fps. Decent accuracy and managable recoil. Can't wait to try it on some game. Maybe a hog next weekend when I'm bow hunting.

The 35 whelen is one of my all time favorites. When it gets to the point that one of my 7mmwon't do it,I go to 35 whelen, skipping 30 caliber completely. The 35 whelen with right bullet,in right hands, will kill anything in north america.

Yah, there is a reason they made this old wildcat a factory round. It works.

After using 270's & 6mm on deer for many years, I bought a Whelen when Remington issued in their 700 Classic line. The effectiveness of the Whelen on game absolutely impressed me. I took a bunch of whitetails, couple of muleys & elk, & a moose with it.
One of the excellent characteristics of this caliber is that due to its bore diameter & modest velocity, it is a very effective killer with "standard" bullets. You just do not need to use high dollar projectiles in the Whelen, and it will never disappoint you. I have yet to recover a bullet from a game animal.
The only long kill I ever had to make was with the Whelen, on a PA whitetail, at a bit over 300 yards, with the 200 gr Hornady. I have been nothing but pleased with the caliber.

I advised and helped a buddy build a 35 whelen garand and it instantly became his "go to" all time favorite rifle.
Now,it's hard to even get it out of his hands as he treats it like a only child.
