What is the best distance to sight your rifle in at ?

For centerfire rifles 100 yards is most comon to sight in at not only to get precise placement,but also sighting in at that distance will alert you to flyers or other accuracy issues. When sighted in at 1.5-2" high at 100,you'll be dead on at 200. If you want maximum point blank range with most modern rifle cartridges,adjust scope for 3" high at 1oo yards. This will give you not over 3.5 high at midrange but you'll be dead on at 300 yards and 7-10 inches low at 400 yards depending on caliber of course.

Starting out I usually start at the 50yd then move it out to 100 yd .

It depends on the caliber and also the type hunting you do. As was stated in a previous reply 100 yds is a good range to judge accuracy, but isn't allways the best choice for every ocasion.

100 yds. is the recognized standard for most bench shooting and sighting in work. Most sight-in targets are referenced to 1 in. @ 100 yds.

Your question can be interpreted two ways If you are asking the best range to shoot when sighting your rifle in, then I would say 100 yards is the best place to start unlessyou are just starting with a new rifle; then, I would recomend you start at 25 yards, then go to 50 yards, then go to100 yards, and finally finish shooting at the range you wish your rifle be zeroed at.

If you are asking at what range your rifle should be zeroed, that depends on your hunting area, maximum shooting range, etc., but generally, I agree with stalkingbear - 3 to 4.5 inches high at one hundred yards will zero you between 300 and 375 yards depending on caliber, bullet weight, velocity, etc. Ifthis is your question, try this link for afree balistics calculator and go from there. http://www.hornady.com/ballistics/ballistics_calculator.php

Of course, this depends on both the cartridge your rifle is chambered for, and how far your fartherst shot might be taken.

I always zeroed my .270's for use in the mountains, where a 400-yard shot might present itself, to hit +3" @ 100 yards. With my 130-grain handloads, the point of impact was still +3" @ 200,-3" @ 300, and -12" at 400 yards. ( B.C. .490, MV 3000 FPS)

In additon, you should always shoot the rifle at greater ranges after zeroing, to confirm where it is hitting way out yonder! You'd be surprised how far off in windage the bullet strike can be at 300 and 400 yards with a zero that is apparently OK windage-wise at 100!

it depends on the rifle and load you are shooting. i normaly sight my rifles in an inch and a half high at 50yards. that shouldput you really close at 250 to 300. plus it is easier to bore sight when you look down the barrel to the target.
