M1 Carbines
Hey, I heard some rumors a couple months ago that the CMP was selling M1 Carbines really cheap recently, is that true? I suppose their stock is depleted by now, but I was wondering if the stock is sold out, are the prices still good?
I'm not really interested in buying one, or saving up for one, but I was thinking that ifnow's the time they'll be as cheap as they'll ever be, would it be something to consider seriously, even though I wasn't planning to buy any M1 for some time from now? I'm basically wondering if I can't afford not to look into getting one now, or should I be rest assured that M1 Carbine's prices aren't going anywhere but gradually up, as usual. On a side note, I would like to know if now's a price slump in M1 Garands as well. Am I just being delusional that a "price slump" for any M1 exists? I just thought it would, like, something would stimulate M1 prices to drop at gun shows and such. I won't be able to buy any such weapon till next year in the fall earliest, most likely, unless I find a good summer job. Any info will be appreciated. Josiah |

They are fun but they will fire with the bolt not fully locked down. Wear eye protection.

RE: M1 Carbines
I agree 100% with El D. Waaaaay too expensive. These prices 2 years ago would be for a correct grade or collector grade. These rifles came back from Italy on lend lease.....they are mixmasters, that chances are, were abused. These prices are just foolish.....but, if you want one for your collection, you better get in line now. I can see spending 6-700 for a Garand, however, these prices are rediculous. Regards, Rick.

RE: M1 Carbines
Garand prices aren't going to slump anytime soon if ever;)
$500 for a carbine is a bit steep for a relatively inaccurate rifle of limited use ( people do buy mini-14s I guess:D)- but then again there are enough people out there that "just got to have them" to buy every carbine CMP has on the first day each lot is offered. |

RE: M1 Carbines
as said by eldeguello, 20$ would be worth it, i may even extend it to 50. But not anywhere near the prices the cmp has on them.

RE: M1 Carbines
I'd rather have an SKS, at least as accurate and far more powerful!
Did I mention cheeper to shoot. |
RE: M1 Carbines
So I take it it's better to get an Auto-Ordinance M1 Carbine if any? (One of those newer, replica like ones.)

RE: M1 Carbines
younggun308, most all M1 carbines will be armorer reworked, or parts guns, that's what the Universal carbines were anyway!
Unless I could find an original gun with all matching part #s I would not think of paying the crazy prices being ask. |
RE: M1 Carbines
Younggun, I suggest you hop over to the CMP's web site and ask away on their forum. I've bought both a 1903 and M1 rifle from them and are glad to have them. I'd like to get a Carbine at some point. You are buying a piece of American military history when you purchase one, regardless of whether or not it has been to Italy or is a mixmaster. Not many M1s have all matching parts anymore, either. Unless you're willing to shell out a few more hundred for a correct rifle with matching parts, the vast majority of the rifles for sale have been arsenal rebuilt at least one time over the years.
My Garand is a Springfield made around 1956 and has an H&R bolt and spent a time in Greece. My 1903 is a Springfield made in 1931 that was rebarreled with a High Standard barrel made in Sep 1944. It also spent some time in Greece from what I can tell from the pinned floorplate and black "parkerizing". I paid about $500 for each and have no regrets. My Springfield's stock is beat up pretty bad, but the barrel is in prestine condition and the rifle shoots great. Whether or not you think $500 is a lot of money to spend on an M1 Carbine that's been to Italy and has been overhauled at least once at an armory is up to you. For me, the history behind the rifle is what I'm buying. To each his own. |

"They are fun but they will fire with the bolt not fully locked down."
i've fired over 200,000 rounds through M1 carbines made by every company who built them for the US military. Never had this problem at all. Ifsome one is having this problem it is because of very soft commercial primers or a firing pinstuck in the bolt, probably the latter. |
