RE: HELP

The 300/338 winchester magnums are pretty hard to beat overall. The remington rum is highly specialized and is too much of a good thing due to too much: recoil, muzzle blast, powder usage,length,weight,ammo/componet cost.
The 300 remington saum won't be around long in my opinion as I already see a industry shift toward the wsm line. Weatherby cartridges have allways been too expensive for the amount of increased performance. The .338 federal is marketing gimmick-not saying it isn't a good round-just that the excellent .358 winchester has been around for decades and is proven.the 338 federal is the answer to a question that was never asked. This leaves4 cartridges-.300 winchester mag,.300 wsm,and .325 wsm,.338 winchester mag. Any of those4 will do anything you can dream of doing.

Yeah but James, those days are done. It’s time for the NEW short actions...:D

I don't see the advantage of a short action, I'm thinking it too is just another gimmick to achieve sales. You can do anything on a standard 270/30-06 case that you can do with a short mag except shoot economicaly.
RR
It my be a sales gimmick but alot of people are buying them. Including me. I bought the 270wsm and there is an avantage over the standard 270win. One thing it it at 270Weathery velosities. In a shorter package. And ammo is more common in my area. "Qoute" DON'T knock it unless you try it. As my Dad always says.

there is no way a 270 wsm can achieve 270 weatherby velocities, not enough volume there. horse power is made with cubic inches
RR
I wouldn't necessarily disagree with you butHodgdon's data says differently.

270 weatherby:

130 GR. SPR SP H1000 76.0g = 2941fps - 81.0g = 3259 fps

130 GR. SPR SPH4831 67.0g = 3087fps- 70.0g =3205fps

130 GR. SPR SP H435062.0g=3110fps- 66.0=3262fps

270 WSM:

130 GR. HDY SP H483163.0g=3085fps67.0g = 3228fps

130 GR. HDY SPH435057.0g= 3093fps 60.5=3226fps
63,500 PSI

130 GR. HDY SPH41457.0g = 3065fps61.0g=3235

RE: HELP

There's more to the equation than case capacity. Pressures affect speed of the bullet too as the WSM indicates. Some theorize that the 'fatter' powder column is more efficient too.

RE: HELP

but capacity is the deciding factor if everything else is equal.
A different case design means everything is not equal. Look at the giant old motors in the 40’s. Today’s motors make a lot more HP with far fewer cubic inches. More efficiency is the key. Lazzeroni(sp?) has used fat for length cases in all of his rifles for a while. Makes you wonder where Winchester got the idea, uh.

I chronographed my Remington 700xcr in 270wsm with factoryWinchester 150gr. Power-Point. Chronographed at 3200fps. with their 150gr. bullet. No sign of high pressure.
