300 Ultra Mag

I know a descent amount about the 300 Win Mag and 300 WSM, but not much about the 300 Ultra Mag. Can somebody please tell me a little about it? How flat does it shoot, compared to the Win Mag and WSM? Thanks

The 300 ultra has a lot more case capacity and does produce more velocity than the 300wsm or the 300winmag.It also has more recoil than either of the other two.The factories also load the ultra mag very mild so it can only reach it's potential with handloads.I use the 300ultra mag myself and find it to be the best moose and elk cartridge that I have used.

You will gain about 300-400 fps over the Win Mag or the Weatherby number. If I already had one of the more common ones, I personallly would not buy one. Shells are expensive and you will find them only at full service gun stores so far. If you need the extra range and recoil then it would be a good buy as thier price at least in a Remington rifle is pretty reasonable. As far as hunting goes a Moose or Bear would not notice the defference in any of the 300 Mags.

There is actually a 300-400fps difference between the .300 Win Mag and the .300 Wby Mag. So, apparently, the .300 Ultra Mag must beat the Winny by 600-800fps. Don't believe the factory-published ballistics for the .300 Win Mag, or any other standard caliber, for that matter. The one thing I can say for Weatherby ammunition, expensive though it is, that stuff is loaded!

Got a buddy that has an ultra mag, it is flatter, but it aint 600 FPS flatter! That would mean it is pushing a 180 gr. bullet at 3750fps or so, and that aint happening! And yes, we shoot long range, VERY long range!

a know a guy who has a custom gun done and he has a 300 rum imp that shoots 240gr match kings at 3200fps (that's with a 34 inch barrel and seating the bullets out further). he shot some 180gr bullets once just for fun (the bc is to low to shoot far with them. they drop to fast "way" out there) and he was around 3600-3700fps with them. it all depends what kind of gun your shooting.

I got a 300RUM, and 300Win, and wanting a 300WSM and had the 300Weatherby. Yea, it cooks. If you want a round that can push a 180 bullet 3350fps, then the RUM is for you. Reason I got it was I wanted something to push heavier bullets >3000fps without a belt. But if the recoil is too much, and you want a cartridge without a belt, then the WSM is for you. People are really doing well with these rifles. I didn't like the weatherby and had accuracy problems. If can be very finicky with different bullet seatings due to the extreme freebore. And ammo is outrageous. The 300RUM ammo is getting very easy to find as 300Win, and not near as expensive as Weatherby rounds.

I really enjoy my 300 rum. Mine shoots 3/4" groups with factory 180gn ammo. The 150gns are not very accurate though. I just started reloading it but I haven't had the chance to shoot any reloads yet. Anyone out there have any 300 rum recipes?

Evening. I'm handloading the .300 RUM with 95 grains of H-1000 using a 180 grain Nosler Partition. I get minute to sub minute of angle accuracy at 100 yards. My rifle is a Rem 700 BDL with 26 inch barrel and muzzle break. Regards.
