22 Mag, used, what brand?

Can anyone offer comments on buying a 22 mag.? I want an simple, relatively inexpensive knock around that I can carry on my atv on in the back of my buggy in case i run into a coyote or other predator. I know the caliber is light, but certain times of the yr I am not permitted to carry a larger caliber gun on my lease, but a 22 or in this case, a 22 mag is ok. That should be powerful enough for a coyote and such. However, I don't know about brands, features or quality for the mag series. When series for a 22 long, I learned the 10/22 by ruger was a good choice, so that's what i got. Now i need advice the on the big brother.

Unless you intend to deer hunt with the 22 magnum which I believe is illegal in most states, this thread belongs belongs in the gun/firearms section.

True RM, but teal, did you know that the 10/22 comes in .22 magnum also?

Yeah, the thread will most likely be picked up by one of themods and moved.

But I'd just grab a 10/22 mag and be done with it. Good price and a dang fine little carbine.

I would reccomend you look at local gun/pawn shops for a marlin .22 mag as they are accurate, reliable, reasonable priced, and easy to find.

Aparently Ruger didn't think so, as i do believe they have discontinued it! I heard they have problems...

I bought a Rem 597M several years ago, and it has worked "perfectly" and also it's quite accurate...I use it for "pest control" around my place, and it's been a great gun!

I have two .22 Winchester Magnums, one is a stainless steel model 88338 with a laminate stock and a tube that holds the rounds.

The other is a plain old wood stock, blued barrel with a clip 25mn.

I think I paid $159 + tax, transfer, call in fee for the one.

I believe that the other one was closer to $225 + all the fee's.

My longest shot to date with eiter of them was a bird, sitting on a branch some 300 yards away. I shot it with plain old Hollow Point CCI shells.

A scope is a must for anything over 50 yards.

A good scope is a must for anything over 150 yards.

I have a Simmons on the Stainless Steel Model and a Bushnell on the model 25 mn.

Both will hit a dime at 200 yards!

Anyone that under estimates the power of a .22 Magnum, should look at the last two groundhogs that I shot. Both had a large exit wound on the other side of their heads. \ I shot a skunk the other night in the head at 50 yards.
The one side of its head looked like as if I only grazed it. The other side of it's head was blown clear off.

I'm sorry for the person that attacked this post and said something about not being legal to shoot a deer with a .22 Magnum.

You never said anything about wanting to shoot a deer with a .22 Magnum, nor did you ask about buying a conversion gun.

All you really wanted was some advice as to a good all around .22 Magnum that you could buy that would stand up to years of abuse and still perform reliable.

Either of the guns that I mentioned would suit your needs.
