Most accurate 22LR you know off???
I was on the small game forum and this guy on there was posting pic of squirrels he head shot... I just thought that was awsome:DAnyhow I like to squirrel hunt... I want a good accurate 22LR... Anyhow he was using a Marlin M39A lever action... Man that gun is like 500.00:(I would prob go as high as 500.00 bucks but if I do I'm thinking bolt action...
So can anybody recommend a good accurate 22 for under $500.00??? |

RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???
I just happened to notice browning has a 22LR called a T-Bolt... Looks pretty nice... Has a pretty nice price also...
Does anybody have any expierience with the Browning T-Bolt??? |
RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???
I don't have one, nor have I shot one (disclaimer;)), but if it were me I'd take a strong look at the Browning T-Bolt .22. It's a very nice looking and seemingly well made rifle (as it should be, it's a Browning), and I personally really like a straight-pull bolt. I have an old stock Ruger 10/22 carbine that shoots about 1.5" at 50 yards which it's that great, but I've personally witnessed 10/22's with the straight bull barrels and match chambers shoot ragged hole groups at 50 yards, and the rifle/barrel cost well under $500.

Yeah, MSRP is $647 for the T-Bolt Target/Varmint model and $623 for the base model. The street price would probably be 10-15% less. I'd go with the higher end version as it's got a lot more features for $24 more. Much nicer wood and bluing, heavy, free floated bbl, semi-match chamber, etc...

RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???
See if you can pick up a used Remington 541-T or 541-S....
I bought mine 8-10 years ago, with CCI Hollow points, it will group inside 1/2 inch at 50 yards. |
RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???
I might just get me one of those!!! Man that gun looks nice... I have 2 brownings that shot!!!

RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???

RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???
If you just want an accurate .22 to do headshots on squirrels there is a a whole lot topick from. Ahenry lever rifleis more than accurate enough to dispatch squirrels and it is only $200 or so. Sure you can get more accurate rifles but if all your going to be doing is shooting offhand in the field than you cannot really expect anymore accuracy than the henry or any other low cost .22 can give you. If you are talking about target shooting or those black death targets, its another matter entirely, but headshots on squirrels is very doable under 30 yds with any decent .22 and some practice and still doable at under 50 yds with any decent .22 and a good scope.( this is for someone like me who thinks about shooting alot more than I actually get a chance to)hope it helps.

10/22 ruger! it is cheap, so u can afford a good scope! with that you cant miss! thats what i use for squirell, so far only missed 2 and one of those still hit him in the neck. great gun, especially for the price!
|
RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???
Gotta agree with nchawkeye... Two of my friends own 541-T's and they are awesome shooters with the right ammo in them. Check in some of the gun rags or the used racks and you may be able to pick up a nice pre-owned for a nice price.

In your answer, first you say "you can't miss" and then go on to say that you missed 2... Anyway, to answer to "origional" question that made me open this post... One word... Anschutz! BUT, your splitting hairs at the top, because there's always Coopers and some other imports that are also VERY accurate... DM |

CZ 452,BRNO #5 and BRNO #3 heavy barrel. They have far more accuracy potential than guy holding them.I also own a BRNO 21H two trigger 7x57 and a BRNO ZK47 in 30-06 only 20,000 made and they are both one hole shooters.Awesome barrels.......................Harold I also had a Ithaca 72 lever action [Erma]I foolishly sold .By the way Henry is using their tooling.

If you want to go really cheap, but still accurate, try a low-end Savage. I believe they still make a bolt action called the Mk II (when I bought mine about 15 years ago, it was called a Lakefield Mk II, made by Savage).
It's a bolt-action .22 with a curved, 10 shot detachable magazine, and it's uglier than sin on top of looking and feeling cheap. However, it was the most accurate .22 I've ever had. With several types of ammo I could shoot into one ragged hole at 25 yards and quarter-sized groups at 50 yards. I can't count the number of groundhogs I shot with that gun when I was in high school - from ranges of 10 - 80 yards, mostly head shots. I think you can pick one up for $125 or so, then spend a little extra on a good scope, and you're good to go! |
RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???
my ruger 10/22 carbine shoots 1/4in groups at 50yds, you dont need to spend a fortune, mine was probly about $200 rifle scope and extra magazine.

I have got about $500 in my modifled Ruger 10/22. It has a standard taper Green Mountain fluted barrel. I have not hunted with it yet(just got it). It shoots 1/2to 3/4 inch groups at 50 yards. I am looking forward to squirrel hunting with it this year. It should make a dandy. Tom.

I have a 10/22... I bought it off a guy for 150 bucks... I really havent shot it much... I guess I need to give it a shot:D

RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???
You might get lucky....Most stock 10/22s aren't known for accuracy...
That's why those guys spend so much on modifications... |
RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???
I've got an old Cooey that was passed down to me by my grandfather. It's one that has the tube mag. Even though it is old I don't believe how accurate the gun is. The barrel is about twice as thick as any other .22's that I own.

RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???
You have a model #60 or #600 and they are quite accurate.Try puting a weaver 1" side mt on it and watch it shoot.Don't waste your time with the smaller .22 scopes.Harold

RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???
Henry makes pretty good rifles. I and afew of my friends have had major problems with both jamming and poorly made barrels (ie. bored too small). The ruger 10/22 is a great gun for squirrels. You can customize them and do all sorts of stuff if you want to put the money in on them. My personal favorite is my marlin semi-auto with nikon 4X scope. Its not fancy but it will cut a string at 50 yds and I've taken a heck of alot of squirrels with it. You may want to ask the kid in small game who says he had 1/4" with a 22 at 200 yards

RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???
I use a ruger 10/22 with an aftermarket barrel and stock. The whole package cost less than $500.With it's favorite ammunition it has no problem keeping five shots inside 1/2" at 50 yards.

RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???
My Remington 597 is oddly enough one of the most accurate .22LR's that I've ever shot. No gripes from me about it.

RE: Most accurate 22LR you know off???
I've got one of those Marlin 39A Golden. My wife's uncle passed it on to me. He had Gunsmith 300 in Colorado Springs work it over. It's one sweet shooter!
