Slug choke (vs rifled barrel) any good?
 

I just recently moved to Ohio which is shotgun only. I have a Remington 870 (18" Special Purpose) with rifle sights, smooth bore, that takes screw-in type chokes.

My question: How well would a rifled choke work in firing slugs through this gun(versus an actual rifled barrel)? Would it be worth my while to even get the rifled choke? It's going to be a big adjustment from the riflr, as you can imagine.

well you wouldnt know unless you tried the choke, but from what i have heard the rifled barrle is better, i am from ohio, where did you move to? and also my cousin hunts with a smootbore up there so if your accurate with the 870 the way it is with rifled slugs then dont do anything, you have alot of time to try stuff out there gun season isnt till the end of november. good luck

Actually you'd be surprised what accuracy you can achieve with a cylinder bore choke and rifled slugs!

I know it wasn't in the question, but have you thought about a whole new gun? You can get a moss. 500 slugster w/ 24" rifled barrel w/ rifle sights and tapped for scope for $200, or the combo for $300. I have this gun, in all honesty it is a rather cheap gun, but it shoots real accurate. $300 also gets you an 870 w/ rifled barrel, but it only a 20" barrel. However, if you go this way, then you need to buy sabots, and they aren't exactly cheap either. Just a thought, I know its a chunk of money but I thought I'd throw that out there.

WARNING
REM CHOKEBARRELS, are not recomended for slugs
sometimes blows the choke tube off the end of the barrel
or expands the the choke tubeandmuzzle
the older system not recomended for steel shot even.
