1,000 yrd big game hunting
 

I was talking with a brother in law who went to a long range shooting course and the instructor, had for purchase and whole heartedly recomended the 30-378 weatherby rifle's. He told them it is the only cartridge that had enough energy ft. lbs at a 1,000 yrds to kill a big game animal up to elk. One guy there for the class had a 300 ultra remington mag. The instructor told him that would be a good 800 yrd cartridge but if he wanted 1,000 yard big game rifle he needed the 30-378 weatherby to make it. Mind you he was not pushing his rifle's for purchase but had them there as an offer. I do not shoot out to 1,000 yrds nor do i intend to (for big game). But I can't believe that the 300 RUM is a 800 yrd cartridge while the 30-378 Wby is a 1,000 yrd. I wondered what you all thought of this. The 7 RUM and 300 have the same case I believe.

Sorry the pic above the farright cartridge is a 30-378 and the one next to it is a 7 remington ultra mag.

Sorry, this is just a little off the topic, but on it to some extent.

I am not the expert here, and I haven't nor do I ever plan on taking big game at 1000 yds / meters. However I have to disagree with the statment that the 30-378 is the only cartridge out there with enough energy at 1000 yds to take big game. Take a look at the numbers below for the .338 Lapua Mag. Just shy of 2000 ft-lbs of energy at 1000 yds.
I only bring this is to play because it to me would question the instructors credibility a little. I don't know much about the .300 or 7mm RUM cartiridges. I am sure that he knows more about big game hunting than I do, I don't deny that. But the issue of the ONLY caliber, makes me wonder.

Let me address the cartridge issue first. Your instructor either needs to learn more or has forgotten the lazzeroni line of cartridges amd the .338 laupa round. Now to the main part-I will firmly state that NOBODY has ANY business shooting game that far unless already wounded. That's the main fault wrong with modern tech. The rifles I build just because they will group 2.75"-4.33" at 800 yards don't ean you should go out there and start shooting game that far. I'm old fachoned but I think we need to put the hunt back in ****ing. If I may suggest,try bowhunting for a few years and you will learn a lot more about deer behaviour.

I know guys who can take a 1000 yd shots but I think the instructor should discourage hunters from doing that. Few of us ever practice at that distance and would know how many clicks to dial in for elevation and windage correction for the given cartridge and external conditions. Yes you can bring your Palm Pilot with your ballistic program with you and dial temperature, humidity, pressure, etc ... but I think you are better off walking a little bit more and take a 200 yd shot!

Part 1. There are plenty of cartridges that can effective at 1000 yards. It just so happened that the instructor has one of those that he wants to sell, so he is pumping it up and downgrading several others.
Part 2. There are two reasons to shoot 1000 yards. Military applications and long range target shooting. No one has any business shooting game at that distance. End of discussion.

Bingo. Very,very few folks have ever fired at 1,000 yards with any kind of gun.Of the very few who have fired at 1,000 yards, a very small percentage can hit a game sized animal consistently at that distance. The folks who hype this crap on TV never show the wounded animals that crawl off to die.

Though I am very impressed with anyone who has the capability to accurately shoot at 1000 yards, there is no way that I would call it "hunting". In my opinion, "hunting" means that you actually have to "outsmart" you quarry not just "snipe" it from over a half a mile.

Aint' never going to agree with each other.
I don't really care if they do or not.

I haven't done the long range hunting thing, but I will say this....
I don't consider bagging an elk at 30 yards with a high power rifle (which I've done, low power setting on the scope) to NOT be much of a challenge or really even a thrill, he don't have a chance.... move out to 200 yards and now it starts gettinginteresting.

I do go ahead call the 30 yardkill "hunting" though.
I also call the400 or 700 or 1000 yard kills, that different hunters mayget,"hunting."

The bagging of the animal is such a minority (but important) part of the hunt that it can hardly be the central point of defining "hunting."
