RE: .300 Remington Ultra Mag

I got a reply back from Remington, and they say that they have no intention of discontinuing the round.

I am consideering buying a Remington 700 in .300 RUM. However, today I was at Gander Mountain and the guy at the firearm counter said that Remington is going to be disontinuing rifles that use this round due to lack of interest.

Has anybody heard this? If so, should I stay away from that rifle?
Isn't it wonderful how, whenever a store like Gander Mountain hires some dufus and puts him in the gun department, he automatically becomes a damned expert!

Even if Rem. decided to discontinue the chambering of riofles for .300 RUM (not likely!!), it would be decades before they stopped making ammo! The same thing happened to the .280 Rem., once upon a time. It is now back, stronger than ever! How long has it been since anyone chambered for the .300 H&H?? You can still get brass at least for that one, and they do make ammo for it too from time to time!

Now, as for what you really NEED, please be advised that the 7mm Remington Magnum will kill ANYTHING on this continent, and most things in Africa too, if you aim it right and use the right BULLET!

For doubters-william "karamojo" bell killed hundreds if not thousands of elephants with perfected precision brain shot with a 7x57mm and fmj bullet. Could he have killed as many without getting killed with less skill but bigger rifle-I really don't think so. He studied until he was actual expert on bullet placement and was a marksman without peer. That's why I say it's shooters skill-not big supermags that gets the job done.

I would be suprised if they were discontinuing that cal., considering they have recently introduced the power level ammo for it, giving it the level of a 30.06 , a 300 mag., and a 300 RUM in power level ammo I, II , and III respectively. See link....

Hope this helps.

Makes me scratch my head why someone would buy a RUM then download to levels of cartridges that cost much less to buy and more readily available[&:]! Couple that with the RUM's only show a benefit over the 300 wm in handloading capacity. Musyt be for head reasons, so the shooter can say "I shoot and ultra mag".

I agree with the others that the 300 RUm is the most popular Ultra mag and well established, I don't think it will be going anywhere soon because their are many who will load it and finds its potentials. I also agree that it is not neccessary for most NA game.

I have always thought I'd like to own a 300 rum but a bad shooting shoulder means I am less profiecent with its recoil then others so it makes no practical sense for me. BTW i use the 7mm rem mag for antelope to moose and never felt I needed more. Match the bullet to the application and driving it home are all that is required.
