7.62x39
i want to get another deer and coyote rifle. i was thinking about getting a 7.62x39 because the ammo is cheap, the gunis cheap, the cartridges are small, and it is not too powerful. my shots will be out to 350 yards. is htis a good choice?

RE: 7.62x39
The ballistics on that round get pretty dismal out past 200-250. The cheap ammo I have bought of late has been some of the worst I ever used(Wolf). For long shots I would advise against the 7.62X39.
If you are working with a tight budget, or have imposed one to preserve matrimonial harmony, you can pick up a Stevens bolt-action pretty cheap, and it comes in some more appropriate chamberings for shots out to 350. Rounds like the .308, .30-06, .270, 7mm-08, or 7 mag would be good for deer or coyote out to that distance. .223 is very popular for coyote, but some folks don't like shooting deer with it. I hunt deer with the .223, but most of my shots are well within 100 yards. I don't think I would shoot a .223 at a deer much past 200. |

RE: 7.62x39
o, ok. well then wat is a good short actioncaliber that has good ballistics out to 350yds, has cheap ammo that can take deer and coyote, w/ low recoil, and a low priced rifle?

RE: 7.62x39
223 or 25-06:D. WELL, Maybe a 243[:'(];)

RE: 7.62x39
A Savage /Stevens model 200 or a Mossberg 100 in a 243win should do what you want and they are both under $300 . The cheap ammo for the 7.62X39 isn't any good for deer and in most states isn't legal .

RE: 7.62x39
for deer out that far i would wont a 308 or 30.06 bolt action.
but i would not make a shot that far as i am not that sure of my shooting pass 150 to 200 just don't get something that is a off cal i think a 7.62 ar15 you can usa 308 bullet which gets you the good 350 yard caliber and the ars are very acc. |
RE: 7.62x39
I suggest a .308. You can pick up surplus military ammo for the coyotes. Accurate enough to kill them, and cheap. You can get suplus military ammo CHEAP. I used to shoot portuguese surplus that shot 1 in groups fairly consistant at 100yds. Rarly tighter than that, but accurat enough for yotes and practice. Youcan buy better ammo for your deer needs.
I strongly suggest you stay away from the 7.62x39 for anything put plinking. It's cheap ammo. That is about all that is good about it. |

But for range, it is definitely no better than a .30/30. I don't think it would be advisable to shoot a deer with it at 350 yards. But it would be OK on coyotes at that range, if you are good at range estimation and know the trajectory! With a MV of 2300 FPS, it is NOT what you'd call flat shooting! If you want to shoot deer at 350 yards, get a .270 or a .280! |
