It's old.
It has a removable magazine.
They are usually accurate.

Wanna know what I think about them. Just bought one in 222. Old, used but in excelent cond. Cost 350. Only shot it at 100yds. so far. Groups just as good as my new 700 LTR in 308 that cost 900. What they say is true, ugly and cheap made but very accurate. Mine also has a Timney trigger. They only run about 70 for the 788.

Once in a while the bolt handles come off. They sold new for 95-105 bucks. I have had half a dozen of them, two were LH, a 6MM and 308.

Well, I did a search. They are not quite as old as I thought.
What I found said they were made from 1967 to 1983.

The 788 was a good little inexpensive bolt-action rifle chambered for some good cartridges - much better than Remington's later attempts in the budget-rifle class.

They should still be making it.

Pick one up a couple years ago from a guy at work. It's ugly, looks like the varnish was applided with a mop, blueing is spotty and the bolt face has some erosion around the fireing pin hole. This one is chambered for 22-250 and has 24" bbl. The seller said it had a problem eith the shell case seperating, maybe a headspace problem. I shot some of my reloads for a savage 22-250 I have and no trouble at all with either extraction or case seperation and it turned out to be very accurate. My reloads are not full length sized and I think the seller had been shooting factory ammo so it may have a slight headspace issue. Seams these guns have a history of the bolt srinking in length over time and with use and that can cause a headspace issue.

Oh, paid only $100.00 for it too.
