Have one in 223 and it shoots awsome. It's a very good model gun for the price... And they are a very relible in cold weather!!! I know because I use mine in Sask. Canada to shoot dogs in -40 degree tempatures and it hasn't let me down yet...

I have one that was my first rifle. A 22-250. Cheap ugly wood stock soon replaced by a nice ram-line synthetic stock, a set of bipods and a decent scope turned an ugly rifle into a real nise shootin gun. I am currtenly trying to start a collection of 788 parts and complete guns - only finances dont allow it at this time. Lots of great calibers and some novelty - like the .44 mag. Not a novelty cartridge, but in a bolt action its pretty cool to me. I wish remington still made em, but alas, such is not the case

One of the better rifles Remington has ever made. I have 7 in varying calibers and every one of them is as accurate as a new 700. Only problem I've encountered is trying to find someone to rebarrel one of my 788's in .223. Seems no one wants to mess with it. This would be its second barrel and I think that is what guys are affraid of but im not sure.

They also made a 30-30 that was awesome in the accuracy dept. Some people had the extractor changed to a Sako style.I had both a .223 and a 22-250 and like a fool let them go.............Harold

Odd you would have trouble finding someone to rebarrel one. At one time the 788 action was popular with some target shooters.

Thats true, they had a very good trigger and fast lock time. My first steel silhouette rifle was a LH 788 in 308. I shot out several barrels then the bolt handle came off. Great guns dirt cheap.

Remington quit making them because they would outshoot their new 700. It was hard to sell a more expensive rifle that did not shoot as good as the older cheaper one. Tom.
