What are some opinions on this as a hunting round? Largest game it could handle and accuracy. Im not a huge gun hunter, mostly archery in the midwest but I do go on a rifle hunt from time to time. I want to have a custom rifle built and make it my one gun I use for most species. It would be for Mulies on down for the most part and is it to small for one or two elk hunts even with a premium bullet? I want to reload it to shoot one specific round throughout my rifle hunting years. Im thinking 140 grainers. What would you guys recommend. In the past I did alot of handloading so Im familiar with that and have the equiptment. Mostly all varmint calibers though. There may be better more practical rounds but I just like the 6.5. Lets hear what you guys think. Thanks in advance.

I think its ballistics reflect that of a great hunting round for deer. Antelope, sure, elk, it's getting marginal but it could handle them just fine I reckon.

Thats the big question. Im thinking more of a semi custom in a NULA, HS, or even a Cooper. What are your opinions? Id like a Bansner or Jarrett but Im a father with 4 kids 14 and younger and Im sure my wife would have a problem with a 5K rifle purchase. I can get away with 1/2 that price with some sweet talk.

Might as well give it a try. Heck at a 1000 yards would be a snap on elk maybe 2000 even. Do I hear three?

Its not far behind the old 264 Win Mag. I would use it out to 300 yards on Elk maybe a bit more on deer and pronhorn. Its in the 270, 280 7x57 class. Money wise I would just buy a 270.

I recently seen a guy with a Cooper Arms 6.5-284, and of course its a cooper and was shooting awesome groups. Said he paid 2K for it. Next rifle I get, I might get a cooper.

I have several Cooper rifles and just recently waited 8 months for this one chambered in 6.5x284. This rifle shoots very well and can shoot in the .1's when I can.;)I just weighed this one and with the Mark 4 it comes in at 10lbs 2oz. While the M22's are single shots, Cooper now has a M52 which is a repeater but it's only available in 06 based cartidges at this time. If you are wanting a hunting rifle to tote I would go with the HS or Ultralight Arms.

As stated the 6.5x284 is in the 270 class cartridges but with the high BC and high SD's of the .264 bullet, it makes a great long ranger.
