Both those calibers are excellent choices for what you have in mind. I have hunted with both, and killed deer with both. What I feel is most notewothy is the fact that the .270 is pretty much done with bullet choices at 150 gr., and you have more options with the 7 mag if you wish to pursue it. The .270 seems to do best with bullets in the 130 gr, range, depending on twist, and the 7mag seems to shine with 140 rangeand higher bullets. You need to decide on what you wish to shoot bullet-wise for the game you wish to hunt, and make your choice accordingly.
I know that the devotees of each will chime in, but for my money, with deer-sized game at reasonable ranges, the .270 is a tough act to follow, and only a slight whisper away from the 7 mag in factory ammo

I agree, both are really close in performance with similar bullets.I think I would really look into the .270 WSM though. But either the .270 or 7mm Mag are great choices. I have both and have shot deer with both, and as far as I know, the deer didn't know the difference :D.My next rifle will most likely be the .270 WSM, come on Cooper come out with one!!;)

Just re-read it, are you really from Iceland??

Of those two,I would always choose the 7mmremmag.However I do prefer the 7mmstw for that application since it shoots even flatter than the 270wsm.

I would get the .270wsm,it seems to be a very good round for your application.I agree with stubble on the stw,it is a great round but not to many around. If ya just ask what I would use it would be my 6.5X.284.That is a long range cartridge that just keeps going and going.

I’m talking about shooting at ranges that will in some occasions exceed 300 yards…not that I’m very keen on shooting much further but I tried a 7mm STW the other day and Ohh Boy… it heats up after 2 shots ! The problem I see with that calibre is the shortage of good cases for reloading and the really long barrel is heavier to carry. So I think 7mm rem mag would bee wiser. Already have in my save a 25-06 and a .338 win mag for the really big stuff;)

P.s. Jeepkid.... Yes, I’m a pure breed original Icelandic Viking !!

Well, there are bullets heavier than 150 grains for the .270, but they are pretty much handloading propositions. However, for the game you listed, there is no need for a .270 bullet heavier than 130 grains.

Rather than being a disadvantage, one could regard thelack of a wide variety of bullet weight choices to be fortunate-it keeps you from agonizing over which weight to choose.........

BING, The way the 130 performs in the 270 pretty much eliminates the need for many other bullet weights.

I own and hunt with both rifles. For the application you stated I would shoose the 7mm mag. The down range hitting power at extended ranges gives the 7 mm mag the edge.
