7mm Rem Mag Recoil

What are you thoughts on the recoil from a 7mm Rem Mag fired from a bolt-action rifle (Sako or Browning A-bolt) vs. a .270 from a semi? Can they be compared and how do they compare. Can the 7mm Rem Mag be shot with accuracy and consistancy? Thanks.

RE: 7mm Rem Mag Recoil

No matter how you slice it, the recoil of a 7mm Rem Mag is going to be more noticable than a 270 Win. Especially if your 270 Win is a semi. Just how much more the 7mm will recoil depends on the weight of the rifle, the weight of the bullet, and the powder charge. I have had a 7mm Rem Mag and now shoot a 300 Win Mag. I feel the 7mm's recoil is sharper and more unpleasant than the 300 Mag, but not altogether unmanageable. I actually have little use for a 7mm, but that is just my opinion. I find the 300 Win Mag to be more versatile.

RE: 7mm Rem Mag Recoil

That is a target we shot using a Remington model 700 LSS in 7 mm rem mag. 4 shots, including the first fouling shot, into a .650 100 yard group. If you disregard the fouling shot, it is .375 center to center. I didnt think that was too bad for an out of the box gun, especially in a belted magnum. The load was 63 grains IMR 4350, with a 150 grain ballistic silvertip.

120,
One of my Winchester 70s is chambered in 7mm Rem. Mag. and the recoil was brutal! FAR more than my 300 mag.
I took it to my GS and had the barrel ported and a new but plate put on and it made a world of difference.

RE: 7mm Rem Mag Recoil

I have found the 7mm to be a fairly mild recoiling rifle.I find the 300 to recoil noticably more in identical rifles. The weight and stock fit are big factors in recoil and I have shot a ruger ultralight in 270 that recoiled more than any 7mm that I have shot.As far as shooting accurately and consistantly that depends a great deal on the shooter.I consistantly shoot 1/2" groups with my 300 ultra mag which rcoils a great deal more than the 7mm and yet I know people who have trouble shooting a 30-06 accurately because of the recoil.

RE: 7mm Rem Mag Recoil

I have a 7 mm Rem Mag in a Win Model 70 Classic Sporter. This is a full size rifle at 8 lbs. bare and a 26" barrel. Compared to the rifle I used to own (.308), the 7mm is much easier on my shoulder. There is a little bigger "push" from the 7mm, but not nearly as sharp and painful as the .308 was. The weight of the rifle seems to absorb much of the recoil. A lot depends on the weight and design of the rifle.
