You guys know how I feel about 270 for elk, not for me. My long time elk hunting buddy wants me to let his nephew use my 270 this year for elk. I know the gun willdo the job if we have the proper bullet and the kid does his part. If the kid does end up using it, what will be the best brand and round for him to use. I do not reload and the biggest grain I have in theammocabinet is the Federal Fusion 150's(got a couple of boxes). Is there a better round without reloading? I want to give him the best available! I know I'm gonna catch some chit for this, but it's cool!

If someone has 150 grain bonded bullets I'd use them....such as TBBc or A-Frame or Northfork etc....

Does Hornady load a heavy(bullet) light Magnum load?? Does Federal load a heavy(bullet) Partition bullet in their Premium line?? That would be the best choices. But personally I would go with a different cartridge. Tom.

If I had to use a 270win,with factory loads,I would use the federal tsx load.

Let'em round up their own rifle.
I'd recommend a 30-06 with 180gr Partitions.
If you're going to cave on your beliefs and hand over your own 270, then I agree with Stubblejumper and get the heaviest ones they make, as it puts the best face possibleon a bad deal. Especially with a newbie.

150 TSX or 160 Nosler Partition.

The .270 Win. is NOT inadequate for killing elk. No matter WHAT you shoot, you have to place the bullet in the right spot.

Too bad you don't handload. I have found the 150-grain Nosler Partition with 53.5 grains of IMR 4350 to be adequate for all North American big game, and even knew of a woman once in Fairbanks AK who had no trouble killing polar bear with that load.

Since I am a coward with nothing to prove, I would prefer my .416 Rigby for such critters. But the .270will sure kill elk!

See if you can find a factory load that uses the 150-grain Nosler Partition,a Fail-Safe, or something similar in a reliable 150-grain controlled-expansion bullet. Then make sure that load is accurate in your rifle.

Given your circumstances, I would try Federal premium brand loaded with 150 gr. Nosler partitions. I would make them buy the ammo though as its pricey:

No need to pay that price for 150 grain NP's. I shoot'em through my .270 and get them for under $20 on sale at Wally's.

Lots of elk have been taken with the 270. Not the greatest calber for that animal but with good shot placement it will do the job. Mightwantto restrict the yardage of the shots though. I would use as big as bullet as I could though.
