What .270 Bullet for Black Bear

Hey guys,

A buddy of mine is heading to Canada to hunt black bears. He has a .270. What bullet type and grain would you recommend?

Thanks

Tom

I would use the 150 or 160 grain Partition bullet. However even a good 130 grain bullet like the Partition or Barnes TXS will do the job on Black Bears. I also wouldn't hesitate to use the 150 Grain Hornady interlock.

270 ain't good for killin much, unless you believe o'conner, and he's dead.

The same guy that says Bigbulls may need to learn how to shoot says a 270 aint good for killin much....ohhh the irony..

I bet there'd be a different answer if it was chambered ina Weatherby rifle...:D

Just about any 150 grain or a quality 130 grain like James said will work. Seen several killed with 150 core lokts...and the blackies dont get much bigger than they do in this area.

Ditto that thought. The last bear I shot died at the end ofa .270 with a 150 gr power point. The bear before that died at the end of a 30-30. Put it in the right place and they will die.

I've never been there so I couldn't say either way but I can tell you that the blackies here can get very big.
That being said, a .270 is just fine for taking one.
150 grain Partition, Interlock, just about anything really, and you have no worries... if 130 grain, go with a premium round.
Put the bullet in the boiler room, same result....dead bear.
Good luck to your friend !!

What a load of pure, unadulterated bull crap.

I've killed a number of canadian black bears though only one with a CF. "Big breath" that was with a Hornady Interlock Sp 130gr fired from a 270 win. The little rascal flattened the boar with a single shot and no steps taken after the hit. Lucky I guess:eek:!

As far as bullets I'd suggest the likes of Nosler Partition, Swift AFrame, Hornady Interlock sp, Speers TBBC or Barnes TSX. 130-150gr.

Good Luck

Go 150 grain Winchester ballistic silvertip or the Federal Premium
150 grain Nosler Partition.Very accurate and will flat put em down.

I would guess that the 270 would be in the top 4 or five all time game getters in centerfire rifles. Along with the 30-30, 30-06 375 H&H 303 British,45-70 and the 7x57. More recently add the 243 and 308.

I certainly hope you meant this in jest. One of my sergeants once called my .270 "a varmint rifle". So the day after I'd killed two 300+ pound blackies with it, (2 shots with the 150 grain Nosler Partition, one at 30 yards, the other at 200+) he said "well, them bears ain't nuthin' but varmints"......

Use the 150-grain Nosler partition. Load them with an accurate load that gives you+-2800 FPS MV. The bears will die. if you get the bullet into their chest cavity, that is.

What has already been said. Any good bullet 150 gr out of a 270 will be more than enough for a black bear.
