20 ga slug gun ammo

What 20 ga slug gun ammo are people using and what is the effective range?

Rifled or smooth bore? Some of the newer modern sabots for rifled barrels have similar performance to inline muzzle loaders. On paper many of them can probably kill out to 200 yards. Realistically, probably more like 150 yards if you happen to have a gun that can shoot that well at that distance. 200 yards seems to be the holey grail of slug shooting.

For a smooth bore 20 ga I would say 100 yards would be pushing it, if you could get your gun to shoot that far. 50-75 yards is probably more realistic.

With the newer sabot loads the 20 and the 12 ga are pretty much on par with each other. The 20 maybe having the slight edge in accuracy and the 12 ga having the upper hand with heavier bullet weights. Both kill about the same at equal distances though when you boil it all down.

For a smooth bore the 12 ga has a distinct advantage. I would suggest reduced reciol 12 ga loads over a 20 myself, but a 20 will kill deer.

My opinions and nothing more.

Paul

I use an H&R rifled 20 ga slug gun. The Hornady SST 2 3/4 inch were all over the paper with little if any consistency. The Federal Vital Shock 3 inch grouped much better, but still a little inconsistent.

The new slugs from Winchester (can't remember name but they come in a black box) are meant for rifled deer barrels. They are claiming that the slugs have no drop out to 200 yds. Accuracy is supposed to be pretty phenomenal as well. May be worth it to check out the Winchester site to check em out for yourself.

I use Winchester Partition Golds... They shoot Great out of my 1100.
I think it depends on your gun... My father in law swears by the Lightfield slugs, but they were all over the paper for me...

They are mistaken if they think that slugs (and other ammunition including rifles as well) have no drop out to 200 yards.

Hey Timbercruiser: I think the ad has the chart right there on what is the drop rate from 50 yds right out to 200. I personally believe it. Way back when I was using the smooth bore and rifled slugs (ages ago it seems) I could easily get out to 75 yrds with very minimal drop. With the advances in ammo nowadays I can easily see that someone has figured out the technology for creating a better rifle slug. Take the bow for example. At one time there was only the long bow and now look at the market. I believe that Winchester HAS produced a shotgun slug that meets what they are saying it does. IMO anyways.

user - I have the same gun. Actually we have a 20 and a 12 gauge.

Initially we were very happy with the 3" Remington CopperSolids. I found a boat load of them for like $3/box at Kmart when they got out of selling guns and ammo. But eventually our stockpile od them ran dry.

So being the Brenneke kind of guy I amwe tried the regular (non-sabot) 3" Brenneke magnums and haven't looked back. We get great accuracy from that 20 gauge H&R.When I get back on my home computer I'll post some pics of what my boy Ben can do with it. Prettyawesome.

I don't shoot sabots out of my 12 either. Yeah you have to keep on the barrel cleaning but not an issue IMO.

Too many folks dedicate themselves to "I have a rifled barel on my shotgun - I HAVE to shoot sabot!"

BS I say. Guns have had rifled barrels for years and years - long before sabots. I don't see anyone shooting sabots out of their pistols or rifles.

In closing, when you find the right ammo for your H&R - YOU'RE GONNA LOVE IT!
