restocking a youth rifle
Can a youth model rifle be restocked with a full size stock? My brother is thinking of buying his son a youth model 700 rifle but doesn't want him to out grow it in a year or two.

RE: restocking a youth rifle
A friend of mine has a Rem model 700 in 6mm that came as a youth model. He put a standard synthetic stock on it. I'm pretty sure everything is the same except the stock.

Popeye....while a (for example) Remington Model 7 youth in .243 is a great youngsters gun, it can be easily restocked with a full length stock later......no sweat. But you still have the 20" barrel.....and maybe now you want a .22" or 24" barrel!! But maybe later the youngster wants a 7-08 as well.....
My recommendation.....find a used youth model and when the youngster is big enough to handle the full sized gun.....get him a "good one" and trade the used youth model in!! |
RE: restocking a youth rifle
I have a rem 700 youth in 243. my son is 12 and has used it for two years. i am going to convert it to a bdl on a laminated stock soon.
yeah it has a 20" BBL but it shoots very well!!! SOUTH ARKANSAS REBEL |

My cousin did it the other way around. He purchased a Win. Model 70 Pre-64-type action, and had the stock cut to fit his son. Now his son has grown out of it, and has replaced the stock to fit his now older son. Good luck.

Great idea! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Go ahead and buy the Youth Model, then restock it later. But make sure he has the rifle chambered in a cartridge that will grow with the boy, also.
If this is a deer rig, I'd suggest the .260 Rem first, then the 7mm-08 Rem, 6.5x55 Swede or .257 Roberts. Any of these are perfect youth/adult rounds with excellent range and stopping power for deer-sized game and minimal recoil. Good Dogwork and Good Hunting |

Thanks guys for the feedback, I'm pushing for him to buy a youth model in 7mm-08 and then do a trade-in later. My brother is a big 308 fan but I think that it could be to much for his son.

Buy the rifle in an adult size. Then buy a youth stock to fit it. Keep the adult stock till it fits your child, then put it on.
