Ruger MKII 7mm-08
 

Greetings - First post!!!
Just ordered the compact Ruger 7mm-08 for the wife.

Looking for any info on how to outfit this with bullets and weight as well as any ballistics you may have experience with

ordering the Leupold VX-1 3x9-40mm scope for it

will be focusing on whitetail in New York

Welcome....

My brother has used a 7mm-08 in a Remington Model 7 since the early 80s...All he has ever used are the
140gr Remington CoreLokts...He has probably killed over a hundred deer with, they work.

I have a 7mm08 Rem. 700 and sinceI got it a couple years ago all I've shot are 140 Corelocks. Shot one at about 70 yards entered and broke the back bone right above the hind quarters, found it in the skin by the ribcage. Perfect mushroom and the deer was DOA.

139-140gr bullets, such as Hornady SSTs, Nosler Partitions, Accubonds, Solid base, and Core-Lokts. Ballistics are severely changed from factory specs due to the very short barrel. Shoulda gone with a model 7 or T3 Lite for full performance without the weight ;)

the area we hunt is primarily a 2 hundred yard shot max for the wife...
I know the 7mm-08 is decent out to 200yds with enough power-
and i will definitely have the ballistics down on how that gun shoots before we hit the field- i was more curious if anyone was getting good to fair groups at 100-200yds.


i shoot a 7mm mag- in which i can reach anything further than that.

Looking forward to shooting that gun though!

First off, welcome to the forums....you should be able to get opinions on almost anything you wish to discuss here.
As far as your question about the accuracy potential of the 7-08, there are lots of people on here that will give you their experiences with it, I'm sure.
Personally, I found that mine (700 CDL) likes 140 gr. Accubonds best with a healthy charge of IMR 4350. The accuracy is quite acceptable for my needs. As with nearly any gun, you gotta find out what combination it likes best. After going thru many various bullet/powder combos, that's the one I finally settled on for that gun.
I really think you will enjoy the 7-08, and may have a hard time getting it away from your wife.

Irish Knots - Welcome to the forum!!!

I've found the 7mm-08 to be very accurate in two different rifles. I've got a Rem 700 Mtn LSS and a Rem 7600 pump, both in 7mm-08. I use the Mtn LSS for longer range, out to 300+ Yds, "field" hunting using 145Grn Speer HotCores and and use the 7600 for "woods" hunting with a 154Grn Hornady RN load....both handloads.

Rem 700 Mtn LSS 145 Speer HotCor @ 100 and 200 Yds. (Dark squares are 1/2", lighter squares are 1/4")


Rem 7600 @ 100 Yds w Hornaty 154Grn RN.


Just a word of advice.....if you really like "YOUR" current hunting rifles, don't be shooting your "wifes" 7mm-08 too much or your rifles will start gathering dust in the gun cabinet and your wife will be PO'd at you for wanting to use her 7mm-08 all the time.:D

I have 6 7mm-08 rifles this is my favorite caliber and I feel the best all around cartridge I personally like the Hornary 139 gr. spire point bullet chad

My TC Encore likes all the 140gr bullets I've fed it so far, Nosler BTs, and AccuBonds. It also really likes the 120gr Barnes TSXs. The worst groups I got out of my gun was with the 139gr Hornady SSTs, which I was hoping it liked since I have so many of them laying around.

Shooting 200 yards, put her 1.5-2" high at 100 yards and aim dead on. ;)
