What rifle to get!!!!!!!
went through my gun cabinet a few times lately and i think i need a another rifle, why? do we really need reasons? but what i;m thinking is probably in the caliber of 7mm08/308/260 something on the side of a softer recoil and fairly accurate, now here's were i get all bound up, what brand to get, savage's shoot great but are ugly as sin, i really like the feel of a remington model 7 but alot of you guys hate remingtons, i love ruger pistols but have never owned a rifle of theirs (not even a 10/22), i do like browning but their outta my price range, and i never really gave winchesters a thought either.
so here;s what i want- almost carbine length, light, accurate, softer shootin, enough ommph for deer/boars/black bears/caribou. any suggestions? "smile, life could be worse.. i could be datin your daughter." |

RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
If I really liked the Rem model 7 that is what I would buy. I will not let anyones opinion by the DECIDING factor in a choice I have to make. I would listen to the other opinions pick up and handle every firearm I could and get the one that tickles my fancy. I do like Remingtons as I have three, also one Ruger, one Interarms, and one NEF. I almost bought a Sako TRG-S but changed my mind when I found my Sendero. I could not handle the Sako and that was part of my decision. I was going to get the 30-378 and who knows it could always be in my future. Luck with the gun you do get.

RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
Since you've already ruled out Browning, which I like and own, I'd have to agree with the others and vote for Tikka. After reading so much about them, and handling some in the gun store, I'm pretty certain that my next rifle will be a Tikka. It's just a matter of time.

RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
Have you ever thought about a CZ 550 FS. It is the full mannlicher stock, 20" barrel, either .243, or 308 with detachable magazine or 270 Win., 6.5 x 55 SE, 7 x 57, 7 x 64, 9.3 x 62, 30-06 Sprg. with fixed magazine. I think one of them in 308 with detachable mag or the 6.5 or 7 x 57 would be a nice little rifle. The 9.3x62 would be great for bears and boars with ballistics near that of a 35 whelen with heavier bullets.

RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
If you like feel of the model seven then that is what I would buy.I have owned two model sevens(a stainless synthetic and a model 7fs) in 7mm-08 and both would shoot 1" or better groups with handloads which I consider very good for a lightweight factory rifle.

Take a look here at the lightning rifle. They aren't as big a name as Ruger, Remington, etc... but they are well made and won't break the bank either. Around here the stainless thumbhole version costs about $550. Alot of gun for the money. The Complete Rifleman has a great review on this line of rifles titled "Bargain Bolt Actions". Definetly worth reading and taking a look at. |
RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
if it was me. i would go with the browning in 7mm-08rem.

RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
Just one more opinion to add to your collection...lol
If you have the money to invest, get you one of the Tikka or Sako. However, if you are wanting to save some of that green to put toward some good glass, I would say go with a Savage (their "out-of-the-box" accuracy has made me a believer), but if you just can't stand that idea...Take bigbulls' advice and go and look at some of those Howas. Fine rifles (imo, some of the finest in mass production) and worth way more than they cost. I love the heavy barreled varminters. But like some have said above, get what FEELS good to YOU. If the rifle is not comfortable for you to handle, the name and the price tag doesn't mean a thing. It's not worth it. One Shot, One Kill Hunting is the one sport where, if you are playing right, the other team doesn't even know you're in the game. |
RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
My wife has taught me to be practical. This being the case I have gone to buying just Remington ADL synthetics. They are chambered in a lot of calibers and they sell for 379-399.00 where I live. Same action as the other 700 Rems. I have just lately got a 257 Roberts and a 22-250. I am still going to pick up a 223 in the same gun for my wife as I have tons of reloading stuff for 223. I love the Savage rifles for the way they shoot but the triggers are just awful. I have a Savage in 260 Remington. Shoots like a dream but the trigger is a nightmare. It is going to the gunsmith for a new Timney trigger. I have a 6.5x55 Swede with a timney trigger. It don,t get no better than that. A feiend of mine borrowed my 260 and took a real nice 5x5 bull Elk with it He used one of my reloads for it. 140 Grain Barnes X bullet. It broke both front shoulders and exited. Still there is very little recoil in the 260. It comes in the model 7 and the ruger light wt. as well. If you still have room for another gun thats all the reason you need to get one.

RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
Absolutely easy decision here.....Winchester Model 70....Pick your caliber.....but if it don't have a three position safety, leave it in the store.

RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
Well Pauly' sounds like you should go with the Remingtons. You said you like the way they feel and I don't think anybody will doubt their quality. It's something you are already familiar with. I am not a stickler for looks so the Savage works for me. Yes the triggers blow but that for the out-of-the-box accuracy, I can work with it. Plus it is available with a real wood stock. I don't like the feel of synthetics. Also, I don't think there is such a thing as an "ugly" gun.
Bottom line, find what feels good and looks good (in that order) to you and buy it. Seems like you already know the answer to your question. |
RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
I would pick a ruger compact in 260rem or a winchester or a savage before i buy another remington rifle . JMHO

RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
I have been using a Model 7 SS in 7mm-08 for deer size game for 5 years now, and I think it an excellent choise. I use factory Federal 140gr Nosler Ballistic Tips.

RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
One more vote for the rifle you like. Friends have the M7 in 7mm-08 and love them. Like stubblejumper stated, most are right around MOA or better with handloads. Factory ammo is also getting easier to find here. Excellent for a small, lightweight rifle.
As an aside, I own several and LOVE my Sakos. But some people do not like the feel of the stock, especially the palm swell. It fits me fine but one more thing to consider. I believe some of the Tikka's have the same stock design. |
RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
Caliber selection is the easy part. 7mm-08, light recoil, plenty of energy and accurate. For rifles take a look at the little Winchester rifle. I think its called a compact. No, I don't have it confused with Ruger; The Ruger Compact is too small for most adults. The Model 7 is also a good choice. I'm a big Browning fan but it sounds like you've ruled them out.

RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
I would go with the old style ruger with the single position safty, since you can't go with the browning, both really good rifes ,get the .308 .good round

RE: What rifle to get!!!!!!!
I have a friend who recently purchased a new deer hunting rifle. He went the non-traditional route.......a very lightweight, bolt-action 7mm-08 Steyr with a synthetic stock. It is very accurate and recoil is extremely mild.
I was very impressed, as I would have never even considered this rifle in the running for ones to purchase (being a devoted Remington 700 fan). It sure changed my outlook! |
