RE: .30.30 lever action
One of my favorite hunting rifles is my Win 94 AE in 30/30 Ackley Improved. Got it topped with Leupold Euro 1.5-4x20mm.
It shoots far better than any lever gun should. Took two deer in rapid sequence with it last year at 190 and 180 yards respecitively. Longest shots on deer I have ever made or attempted. No hold over... just a wet smack sound and a pile of doe. Handloads go out at about 2400 fps with 150gr bullets. Great great deer load. |
RE: .30.30 lever action
ORIGINAL: retrieverman I started my deer hunting "career" 25 years ago with a 1960's model Marlin 336 30-30 and couldn't wait to get a "real" deer rifle, but after many years of being infected with Magnumitis, I have come back to a 30-30 as my primary deer caliber. I used to consider a 125 yard shot with a 30-30 a real "Hail Mary", but with the ballistics of the Hornady LeverEvolution ammo, a 200 yard shot should be easily do-able if the hunter does his part. Here is a buck that I killed in 2006, and a hog that my son killed about a month ago. ![]()
Retrieverman, Awesome pics. Cowboy hat, lever 30-30 and a dead deer. Priceless. Great pic of the boy with his too. Thanks for sharing |
RE: .30.30 lever action
I have learned that it may be the best brush gun out there. If you are shooting 50-100 yards coupled with the right ammo it can be very accurate. If I ever get the chance to do a hunt in the open I would choose something like a 270 or maybe a 7mm with a scope.

RE: .30.30 lever action
My grandfather gave me his old 30-30 after he passed away. He claims it took over 300 deer in the 50-years he owned it between himself and our family!!!!!!!!! It just killed a cow elk for my little brother last season. We spend thousands on new callibers, yet the 30-30 isthe most proven by far.
