RE: What Would You Use

I use two 7mmstw's for all of my deer, sheep and pronghorn hunting.I shoot 140gr ballistic tips at 3500fps and find this combination to be extremely flat shooting and a very quick clean killer.Recoil is dependant a lot on gun weight and style and my guns have slightly heavier than normal barrels and mcmillan stocks with decellerator pads. With the slightly heavier rifle and premium recoil pad my stw's don't feel much different than most 7mm mags.Factory sendero's that I have shot are also quite manageable.I have used many cartridges in the past but the 7mmstw has become my favorite for deer sized game.

DeerHunter, your 270 would be fine. Any hunter worth their salt can get within range of this caliber. If your just looking for an excuse to buy a new gun(who of us isn't?) then get the 7STW. It is a great round but your purpose can be served just fine with the 270 with less recoil and expense.

RE: What Would You Use

Dg-My own rifles weigh around 9-1/2lbs and are quite pleasant to shoot.I have had several people comment that recoil was less than expected. One person would rather shoot my stw's than his own a-bolt in 7mm rem mag. They did not say the same about my 300ultramag or 338x8mm rem mag.I would have to say that stock design and fit are the difference.I find that the mcmillan stocks do transmit less felt recoil than any wood stock.I have heard it explained that the synthetic stocks give a little and absorb more recoil than wood.As I said earlier I also find the sendero's quite tolerable as well. The only other explanation is that either I am very recoil tolerant or that you are very recoil sensitive. At any rate I will not hunt with ear protection so I will never own a muzzlebrake again.I have owned one rifle with a kdf and one with a browning boss and I will never own another gun with a brake. One shot from either without hearing protection and my ears rang for several hours.

Deer Hunter. There is no reason on this planet that your 270 would not be perfect for the hunt you have planned. The 270 has taken every game animal in North America and most of the big Deer sized Game in Africa. If you want a 7mmSTW, I would say get one but you sure won,t need it. If you can shoot your 270 well its all you will ever need for North Amercain hunting. To many Magnum shooters take shots well beyond thier capabilities to make a clean hit and a deer shot in the leg with a 416 rem Mag will go as far as one hit in the leg wit a 270. If a person can judge range well and know where his rifle hits at long range then the magnums will give you a little more useful range but a well placed 270 bullet will kill that deer just as dead and just as fast. I have a BUM shoulder too. I sold my last Magnum this fall and bought a 260 Remington. If my shoulder gets better I may go to a 270 Remington ADL synthetic.
