Its in the 308 7mm/8mm mauser class if you shoot it well its a 250yrddeer gun practice ammo is still cheap. Some of it is old and may be corrsive primed , just means you have to clean right away tonightnot in a couple weeks after a range trip . I've heard that they range like all surplus rifles from 2" to where'd the other three go . Quite a few are real shooters as we're not down to the junk on the magazine floors .

do yall think this is a good gun for hunting
I've heard of M44s and other Mosin carbines shooting reasonably accurately, but I've never seen it firsthand.

If you use Wolf Gold brand softpoint ammo, it is noncorrosive and has brass cases with Boxer primers-it is suitable for reloading.

J/K. They're "minute of man" accurate. I'm not sure I would venture out and try to take something past 100 yards without a scope though. That's just me.

Keep the range at 150yds and under and I think you will have a pretty good hunting rifle. Not because it lacks power, but the accuracy tends to not be so good at extended ranges. I can shoot mine pretty decent out to 150yds after that the groups start to open up beyond what I would consider acceptable hunting groups.

Ours shoots good. Have heard that they are hit and miss far as getting a good one. Would not think twice about using ours out to 100 or so yards. Would have to say the 7.62x54 is capable of much more, but I don't know if the m-44 is, not for hunting anyway.
