RE: What gun is this?
alright, I'll describe it untile i get the pics. Made in 1929; not in shooting condition (splits the case when fired). Has receiver and hammer that resembles a mosin nagant. Very long, about 3.5 - 4 ft. Military issued to my great grandfather.
|
RE: What gun is this?
If it was issued to your Gramps in 29, I'm going to guess 1903 Springfield. Pics would be nice.:D
|
RE: What gun is this?
I'd vote Enfield. They were quite long and in 1929 would have issued. The splitting cases is interesting. I've never heard of one splitting cases and still being able to operate. There were some Enfields made in .303 British, maybe you're using the wrong cartridge.

RE: What gun is this?
What caliber is it..?? Straight or bent bolt..?? Any markings or stampings on it..??.. Detachable magazine ..??..
|
RE: What gun is this?
I'd like to know what caliber it is... my father told me it was probably 7.62, so I'm guessing a 7.62x54. It has a straight bolt, and the receiver looks exactly like that of a mosin nagant. It has a stock that goes about halfway down the barrel, and the stock has no pistol grip with a metal plate on the back. On the top of the barrel, (right in front of the action), it has a star with an arrow pointing up inside of the star. Below it, it says "No.", and below that, it says "102940." To the top left of of the star, there is small circle with the symbol "II" in it. The magazine is connected to the trigger guard. The magazine isn't "detachable," but it swings open like a lever so you can quickly unload the rifle. I'm guessing you reload from the top like a WWII springfeild... or maybe you load it from the bottom... I dont know.
Still tryin these pictures on! Anything that runs on electricity hates me and doesnt want to work!!! ![]() |
RE: What gun is this?
I'd only be guessing without seeing the picture, but it sounds like one of the Russian or Finnish Moisin Nagant variations...
Are you sure about being ISSUED to your grandfather..??.. I know of no straight bolt rifles issued to US troops... |

I know of no straight bolt rifles issued to US troops... In addition, the 27th U.S. Infantry (Wolfhounds) Regiment thatwent to Vladivostok, Siberia to fight the Reds were issuedM/N'sinstead of 03's due to ammo supply problems....... http://www.kolchak.org/History/Siberia/aef.htm |
RE: What gun is this?
Eldeguello.... Thanks for the history lesson..Very interesting... If it were one of THOSE M/Ns it would be a very interesting specimen collector wise..
When Chris mentioned a hammer I just assumed he was referring to the bolt knob... |
RE: What gun is this?
yes, thats what I meant when I said hammer. And referring when I said it was issued, that is what I am guessing because this gun was used on the feild.
|
RE: What gun is this?
apparently, my pictures have to many kilobytes and the files are too large to download. I don't know what to do about that...
|
RE: What gun is this?

RE: What gun is this?

![]() ![]() Look like one of these 2 |
RE: What gun is this?
It looks like the bottom one, just that it doesnt have the wood going all the way down the barrel.

RE: What gun is this?
it kinda looks like an m44 to me.
|
RE: What gun is this?
I'm guessing Mosin-Nagant. If it was American made, that's a really nice collector piece.
|
RE: What gun is this?
Its a mosin no doubt it just missing the forend.
|
RE: What gun is this?
Looks like a Mosin with the fore-stock cut down. The barrel seems too long for a model 44. If you can verify it's chamber to be either 7.62 X 54 or something else you can go from there with deciding how to proceed. Any reputable smith could do a chamber casting for you if you are planning on shooting it. That way you'll know the cartidge you're supposed to be sticking in it and also the condition of the chamber.
|
RE: What gun is this?
I have plans to bring it to the Gun DR. tomorrow.
|
RE: What gun is this?
It most certainly is not a M44, nor was it made in the USA.
Check out this link for more info on the Mosin's. http://7.62x54r.net/ |
RE: What gun is this?
I have an m44 and the action and markings look just like my m44, but the rest of the rifle looks a lot different.
|
RE: What gun is this?
Thanks, fellas. This will stay in the family.
