Handgun Hunting
 

I have a .357 magnum S&W with a 2.5 inch barrel. I am curious if anyone has any experience with this as a hunting weapon, or if they have used a handgun similar to this. It would seem it has sufficient knockdown and penetration power assuming a good shot and appropriate range.

The caliber is good but the lenth of the barrel??? I think if the deer were standing next to you it might work...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I was planning on just using it for small game, squirrels and rabbits, etc. I have not found any rules in Alabama for minimum barrel length, but I need to check.

off a good rest and the animal doesnt move then you might get lucky once out of your 5 or 6 shots. accuracy will be very poor

If handguns trip your trigger, a .22 revolver or semiauto works great on small game and with a lot more thrift...hey it's your gun and money.....Have a ball with it!!

However, I personally consider Remington's .41 Magnum a minumum caliber for deer sized animals. I've used the .357 Mag with horribly dismal results...I suspect it's legal in most states where handguns are permitted for hunting big game!

I wouldn't use it myself,but to each their own.A snubby isn't designed for any distance.Maybe if the animal was right next to you (which is doubtful) it might work.You owe it to the animal to make the most Humane Kill possible.I would keep a 41 mag as a minumum caliber and a minumum of 6&quot; barrel.I would check your states regs.I'm sure there is a minumum barrel length.Even for Tree Rats or Rabbits you need a longer barrel unless they are sitting on your lap.
