Looking for a nice .270
this year will be my first year hunting deer with a rifle...I have been using a shotgun for the past 10 years.
I was looking at getting a .270. i guess I am just wondering what are some good makes to look at, and what scope would be my best bet. I would like something with a nice wood finish, not synthetic. |
RE: Looking for a nice .270
Might take a look at theRemington model 700 CDL. It has the classic walnut stock. Either blued or stainless fluted barrel. The new one have their x-mark adjustable triggers.

RE: Looking for a nice .270
personally,
I'd take a look at the rem 700 mountain rifle or the tikka t3 If you were looking maybe at 270wsm, then I might also look at the rem model seven...sweet little rifle there. Hard to beat the tikka overall though, imo. |
RE: Looking for a nice .270
ive got the remington 700. very nice gun.

RE: Looking for a nice .270
I recentlyought a CZ 270. Very nice rifle. The Remington 700 SPS is probably one of the best values out there.

RE: Looking for a nice .270
The Remington 700 action is what the military sniper schools use in their sniper rifles. .308 and more and more .300 Win Mags.
So you can't go wrong with the Rem 700's. Buy I might suggest the .270WSM while you're at it. Just enough extra bang for any larger critters you may some day hunt. |
RE: Looking for a nice .270
not mentioned yet but i have savage 270 with wood finish, it also has the accutrigger which i like. i havent killed any deer with it yet (got it last x-mas and havent been able to hunt with it yet) but i will this year :)

RE: Looking for a nice .270
I see you're in Fargo, last time I was in to Scheels in Grand Forks there was a very nice used Remington 700 .270 with a Leupold VX-III 3x10 on it. It was synthetic with stainless though. Can't remember the price, but it looked in very nice condition for being used.

RE: Looking for a nice .270
so a .270wsm would be enough to take out an elk at a decent range then? i Read that a .270 gun is a good all around gun for non dangerous game. I don't know if they are talking elephants or Grizzlies. Thanks for all the input, and thanks deadstick for the heads up on scheels in GF, but I really am looking for a nice wood finish.
I don't hunt elk regularly, would like to get out and try it some time though |
RE: Looking for a nice .270
Husqvarna :D
If you can find one.. |
RE: Looking for a nice .270
Take a look at the Sako hunter series with a Zeiss conquest would make an excellent combination...

RE: Looking for a nice .270
ORIGINAL: 700xcr Might take a look at theRemington model 700 CDL. It has the classic walnut stock. Either blued or stainless fluted barrel. The new one have their x-mark adjustable triggers. I've gota bluedone with the old trigger, but the 'smith had no trouble taking it down to a crisp 3#. It shoots far better than I can, and in my eyes, it's a beautiful gun. That being said, if a Ruger, or a Savage, or an A-bolt fits you better, get it! My shoes, jeans, and/or underwearprobably won't fit you was well as they do me, and the sameusually goes for rifles. Get what fits you, and leave the rest of us to our ceaseless ranting & raving. As for scopes, I'd saylean toward a 3-9x for outings in ND. Production numbers dictate that it'll be less expensive than most other magnification ranges, and you'll likely have some longer shot opportunities than we folks back east. There are some tremendous close-out deals on Nikon Monarchs, Browning, & Bushy Elite 3200's. You're getting an awful lot of scope for your money with these models. Check out Natchezss.com, or any of the other sites like CameralandNY, SWFA, & OpticsPlanet. Then again, if you can swing a Zeiss Conquest, you won't regret it, but you're looking at upwards of 400 bills. I determined that it was worth it, for me, but I've not been disappointed inthe Browning that I own, either. Good Luck, FC |
RE: Looking for a nice .270
i would try to steer away from the WSM, there bullets are very expensive and they arent sold alot of places (atleast around where i hunt) if i ran out of ammo (for some reason) i want to be able to pic up the ammo from anywhere that sells ammo, since there arent many stores where i hunt (WV), i want a standard type of ammo so i dont have to ride 50 miles to find the right ammo so i can hunt. so my 2 cents.
