Rust Question?

My washer and dryer are in my garage about 5 yards from my safe. I would love to move them to the basement, but my wife is pregnant and that just wouldn't be fair to make her do the stairs. Everytime I clean my guns and pull them out a week later there is a small amount of rust on a couple of the barrels. Is there anything I can put in my safe to suck up excess moisture? Other ideas?

Thanks Bryan

As I've mentioned in other forums, Cabelas has everything! I'm lookin at the catalog, and they have gun-safe dehumidifiers. I'll list them.

In your case (very high humidity) you probably want to buy the electric Gold Rod. I use the Silica box but I have to recharge in the kitchen oven about once a month. It will be worse in your case.

In the meantime you can put a small extention cord [mechanics wire cage type]with a 20-25 watt bulb inside the safe until you can order the silica pellets or rod.................Harold[ PS generously coat the firearms [bore too] with oil and clean before using]

The light is a great idea. Watch any foam does not touch it.

Goldenrod Dehumidifier. Here in Oklahoma where humidity is so high if we get thirsty we just breathe deeply. Been using the same one for 15 yrs with excellent results. Totally maintenance free also. Plug it in and forget it.

I used the light bulb idea in my wall locker in Viet Nam to keep mildew off of clothing & equipment, and rust off of guns. Here (PA) I use a quart-size silica-gel unit from Brownell's in the safe, and cover all steel surfaces of my guns with Birchwood-Casey SHEATH.I started using this SHEATH about 1963, and have used it ever since. This stuff kept my guns from rusting for three years in Alaska, including time spent on the coast where you have salt spray in the air and constant rain/fog, and never had a rust problem with guns that had an ordinary blue finish. Those silicon impregnated Gun Socks that you can get at Walmart will also keep rust off a gun inside it. But it takes a couple of minutes to put one on and take it off, especially if you have a scope on the gun!
