Springfield Armory XD
I was wondering if any of you guys had any experiance with these pistols, and what you thought of them, my dad might consider getting one, but he'd like your input.
Is the XD chambered in .45 ACP? I saw it's chambered in .357 SIG, .40 S&W, and 9mm Luger, but I was wondering about .45 ACP. Josiah |
RE: Springfield Armory XD
They are chambered in 45ACP. They are also one helluva gun. They shoot very well, and are 100% reliable. When I first got mine I was shooting some indoor league with it. Here it a group I fired at the 25 yard line shooting freehand.

RE: Springfield Armory XD
i dont havetoo much experience with pistols, but my neighbor is a handgun junkie. i was talking to him a couple of months ago and he was rambling on about his springfield armory .40 XD. apparently way cheaper than the glock with the performance to compare. and it also has a safety system like ive never seen.

RE: Springfield Armory XD
I'm a Glock fan myself, but if I was going to buy an auto other than Glock, it would be the XD.
|
RE: Springfield Armory XD
Good gun.
If he wants a 45, you'll be hard pressed to finda high capacity onewith a smaller grip than the XD. Check out the compact 45 too. It has a shorter grip for concealment, but also comes with a grip extender to make use of the full size mags. If he is considering buying a used XD, make sure to tell him to get one of the newer ones that have the melonite finish. Earlier models had a different finish and had problems with surface rust. I'm sure Springfield can check it out for you if you get them aserial number. |
RE: Springfield Armory XD
The XD45 is an excellent weapon. I have had mine for a little over a year with about 1500 rounds through it and zero malfunctions. Excellent weapon.

RE: Springfield Armory XD
I tried out the Glock 17 and the XD9. The XD9 was very nice, it fit my hand well, and had good balance. I ended up getting the Glock 17, mainly because I knew they were good. The XD9 was pretty new at the time. But, from what I have heard since then they are just as good as a Glock, just a little cheaper.

RE: Springfield Armory XD
My dad likes the .40 S&W, since he has experiance with it, but is the .45 ACP any better? He just thinks of it as "fatter, slower".
Which would be better? .45 ACP? or .40 S&W? Ammo availability wouldn't be a problem for either, since they're both popular cartridges. |
RE: Springfield Armory XD
.45 has a lot more energy/knockdown power. But, both would get the job done when it comes to personal protection/law enforcement.
|
RE: Springfield Armory XD
I owned a Springfield XD40 which i traded on a new model Ruger Vaquero. I just don't care for autos. But if I had to carry an auto the XD would be the gun, officially the service model XD-40. It was light, very very durable, decent mag capacity, fit my hand better, the safety system to me is brilliant and I never had a hickup from that gun after hundreds and hundreds of rounds of cheapo plinking ammo. For the time I carried it, I had all the confidence in the world should my life ever be on the line while carrying my XD. I actually converted a few Glock boys with my XD.

I agree thateither cartridgemakes an excellent LE or self defense round but the .45 does not have a lot more energy or knock down power. The ballistics of the two arevery close. |
RE: Springfield Armory XD
"GUNS" June 2007 had a cover story about the Springfield XD .45 ACP. It sounds to be a very well designed and excellent overall choice. From one of the older, experienced guys at the gun store I frequent, he had good things to say about it.
I was actually looking to buy one and may eventually will for other purpose. For now I bought a handgun (Ruger Redhawk .44 Mag - 4") as a backup sidearm when we hunt Elk that borders on big bear country. I think the Springfield XD .45 ACP is certainly worth a close look as a "carry" or personal protection sidearm though. |
RE: Springfield Armory XD
Does the XD have a trigger reset similar to the Glock?
|
RE: Springfield Armory XD
But it does have more power?
Does it recoil more? |
RE: Springfield Armory XD
ORIGINAL: younggun308 But it does have more power? Does it recoil more? In many loadings you have to go to a "+P" loading tohave more "power"in the .45 ACP. I do not want to be on the business end of either one. Go to Winchester, Federal, and others and compare the ballistics of the two.Do a google search forDoubleTap ammo as they produce some excellent self defense ammo. I actually find that the .40 S&W has a snappier or sharper recoil than the .45ACP. I personallyam a little more accurate with my .45ACP than I am with mytwo .40 S&W's.I don't think you can go wrong with either choice. I also don't think you would go wrong with a 9mm either. |
RE: Springfield Armory XD
Funny thing is, Federal's site doesn't have .45 ACP, it has .45 Auto.
Same for the Winchester site. I think that's weird. So, .40 S&W has higher velocities than the .45 Auto, in every comparison I did. SO I guess the .40 S&W would have more advantages. What kind of advantage does the .45 ACP have? Is the ammo cheaper? |

ACP(Automatic Colt Pistol)and Auto are the same thing. In fact on the slide of my Glock 21 it says .45 Auto. It is more of a personal choice on the two cartridges as they are so close in performance. I carrya Beretta 96(.40 S&W) daily as my duty weapon. When I am off duty, I carry a Glock 23(.40 S&W) or a Glock 21(.45 ACP). I don't feel undergunned with either pistol. Did you look at the Double Tap site? If not, look around there and you will see how close these two really are. http://www.doubletapammo.com/php/catalog/index.php |
RE: Springfield Armory XD
With the .45 you can get a bigger bullet. I believe a 230 gr. where with a .40 the biggest is a 180 gr. I am just going off memory with those two numbers. And .40 S&W ammo is cheaper, and then 9mm is even cheaper. ;)

RE: Springfield Armory XD
I own an XD45 and I think it's a fine pistol, zero problems and no FTF issues to date. You can break this thing down and put it back together in under 20 seconds......no kidding!

RE: Springfield Armory XD
I absolutely love my XD-45acp 5" tactical. Its by far the most accurate pistol I have ever owned (non-revolvers).
