Remington model 597
 

I am thinking about buying a .22 cal rifle for general plinking and squirel/rabbit hunting. I have owned a Ruger 10/22 before so I know how good it is, but I would like to try something a bit different,like the Rem. 597. Does anyone have any experience with this .22? The price at Dicks Sporting Goods today is very reasonable,and I like the looks of it and it comes with a scope for $150.

Any problems with the rifle?

I have a 597 and it shoots great, but like previously stated they do have some flaws that can be fixed. Mine used to havea bolt sticking problem until I loosened the guide rails. I also had one of the older style mags, but look on EBAY for some cheap mags. Great shooter since the fixes. You can also go to Rimfirecentral.com. They have a whole section for the 597. Hope this helps.

I've got a 597 only in 17HMR. Really is a nice shooter. I seen the Diicks add this morning, that is a good price. I all ready have 3 22's and the 17. Don't really have much need for another rimfire.

I just got rid of my 597 wouldn't shoot a group to save its life. I don't even know if you could call what it shot at 50 yards a group and I tried every ammo I could get my hands on from high velocity to expensive target nothing worked. If you are looking at inexpensive can't top a marlin.

Biggest piece of crap ever. Jams every 3rd round (if your lucky), crappy trigger, mine wouldn't stop rusting probably due to the rough cheap Krylon spraypaint metal finish (actually krylon would probably have been an improvement).

The two happiest days I had with my 597 were ont he day I bought it for $120 and on the day I sold it a month later for $80.
Yes I am very biased. I will continue to reccomend against the 597 whether or not Remington ever addressed the problems in the earlier runs of the rifle which were substandard junk that Remington had decided to use the buying public as their QC- if they would have taken 5 minutes to test them in the factory, they would have seen that most of them didn't work. I'll never forgive them, I'll never recommend a 597, and I sure as hell will never buy another.

If I'm not mistaken, savage now makes bolt repeater with target apertures for the same price, I've heard nothing but good things about them. :D
