Adding stock weight
I have a savage 110 synthetic 7mm magnum that I would like to reduce the recoil on. What ideas do you guys have to add some weight to the stock?

RE: Adding stock weight
I am not sure where exactly you want to add more weight to the stock at. Since you want to reduce recoil, I would start in the buttstock. If the recoil pad is screwed on, remove it and see if the buttstock is hollow or filled with foam. If it is hollow or foam filled then you have stomething to work with. If you reload for shotgun or know someone who does, see if you can get 2 or 3 pounds ofsome lead shot, say #7.5, #8, or #9, the finer the better. If the buttstock is hollow, pour hollow area full, reinstall pad, and see how weight is added. If it is too heavy, use something like spray foam insulation, styrofoam, packing peanuts, anything light weight to take up spcae to limit the amount of lead shot that be added in the buttstock. I like to use the spray foam insulation. I spray a little in the bottom of the hollow, then pour in the lead shot while the foam is still wet, then spray some on top of the lead shot. you can do one of two things, either reinstall the pad and let it expand to, or leave the pad off and stand it butsock up unitl it epxands, dries, and hardens. Then you can trim it off and reinstall the pad. This will keep the lead shot from rattling around and sounding like a maraca.
If the sock has a foam filler in it aready, all you have to do is cut a little out at a time, add lead shot, and seeif the weight is right. Keep doing this until the weight fills right. If you do it this way,you can cover the lead shot with glue, stand the rifle or stock so the butt is up.The gluewill seep thru the shot and when it dries, it be a solid chunk, and not rattle like maraca, then reinstall the pad. |
RE: Adding stock weight
You might want to try a good recoil pad to replace the stock pad. I don't like adding weight to guns myself.....

My idea is to use the lead weight and expanding foam.
Just install a Simms limbsaver recoil pad on it first. |

ORIGINAL: bigbulls Just install a Simms limbsaver recoil pad on it first. The Simms Limbsavers are a no brainer and well worth the 20 bucks. |
