Weaver,Redfield ,and Simmons are owned by Mead instruments. A little bit of info I learned while calling simmons for a return authorization number, but after buying a new Weaver in 2-10x38. A great scope so far ,but had I known they were made by the same people I would have checked into the scope more before buying it.

I had a Simmons 8 point that came with my Savage 7mag. I had absolutely no problems with it. It was a 2002 model, so maybe they have had some quality control problems of late.

I consider all the Simmon Aetec's I own to be better than all the leupolds I own. The Aetec's are better in just about every scenario that I tested. Never had a zero problem with any of them. I've had to send a leupold back but never an Aetec.

When I was young and dumb I bought a few of the cheaper Simmons scopes ($60 or so), and every one of them has busted crosshairs in them and they are sitting in my closet. One was on a Ruger Mini14 and the others were on my 10/22s. JUNK

For a comparison I have had quite a few cheaper Tascos as well and none of them have failed me once. In fact I still have one on my Remington 700 in 243 and it is a one hole shooter. That scope has been on that rifle for a good 13 years now.

I also have a buddy that is too cheap to buy a new scope for his deer rifle and its a Savage package with the 3-9x32 on it. That scope moves about 1" for every click at 100 yards, it looks like your looking through an empty beer bottle, and if its cold out just expect it to ice over.

"Simmons scopes are junk pain and simple."

Over the past 20 years i have had aseveral Simmons scopes go bad,a bunchof Weaversmade in the past 40
years go bad, one Burris go bad, one very expensive Zeiss go bad, ad nauseum....I put a cheapSimmons shotgun scopeon my then new Encore as a stop gap measure until theLeupold came in.Thatcheap Simmons scope had been on another .50 muzzleloader for 400-500 rounds. It has now stood 200 more rounds through my Encore.

The Leupold is still on the shelf waiting. Law of averages, i guess.

It doesn't matter who makes it, a cheap scope is a cheap scope. You can't compare a $200 scope of any make to a cheap scope that comes with a gun or in a buble pack from walmart.

8 points and other cheap scopes are crap. They might work mechanically for you, then again they might not. However optically they are still crap. Look through one, then grab a bushnell Trophy in the same magnification for 30 or 40 bucks more. Much nicer, clearer optics. And it only gets better from there.

The older Aetecs were great scopes for the money. Probably as good as a cheaper Leupold for less money. However Leupold has much better service.
BSA is the same way, they make some really cheap crappy scopes. And they are indeed cheap and crappy, just like every other scope in that price range. And most likely made in the same factory right next the other brands. However they do make a few that are fairly decent, but they are not cheap either. I know a guy that got rid of his Leupold after using my Catseye BSA scope one year. I personally wouldn't have gone that route, but he liked it that much.

Hey Paul,

I tested my three Atec's against my three Leupold's (two VXIII's and one VXII) The Aetecs where better in every category from an optics point of view. I did low light, low light through glass, optical clarity (reading license plates at a distance). I set all the magnifications to 6x. Since one of the Leupolds started at 6x. The only other difference is that the Aetecs are 44's and two of the Leupolds were 40's and one 50. I held everything else constant.
