Looking for opions on Reminton SPS 700
 

I have been eyeing a SPS Mod 700 in 300RUM. i just want to know if anyone as an SPS and what they think of it.

JamesB will be sure to chime in here. I personally don't have an SPS but I do have a few ADLs which are the older version of the gun. The ADLS shoot very well, and will put most factory fodder under 1" and handloads under 3/4 MOA pretty easily.

I have one in 22/250 blue barrel,and a 270 in ss.Both have shot some onehole groups with reloads.Was at the range one day and a fellow let me try some fusions 130 gr in the 270 it put 3 in one hole at 100 yds.
I like mine and think they are as accurate as any other out of the box.

I like the SPS'.... they arecheap source of actions for my custom projects. I've been involved with the building of probably 10 rifles in the last two years that all started life as SPS'.

as a side note... does anyone have a use for plastic stocks, R3 pads, or Factory barrels? We have several taking up space in the shop.

I have bought 2 in the last 5 months for my sons. One is in 7mm-08 and is the most accurate rifle I own, it will consistently shoot 1" groups with nearly any factory ammo from a shooter that is not capable of better than 1" . The other is a .270 which does not seem to be as accurate. I have fired Rem 130 core-lokts and Rem 115 gr managed recoil at an avg of approx 2". I have Hornady 130 gr SP and 150 gr SP I will try next.

In my opinion, the SPS is as good a value as you will find in the firearm world. The trigger is horrible out of the box but is very easy to adjust to a crisp 3 lbs. Try this http://www.varminthunters.com/tech/crisp.html to adjust the trigger. I was never a Remington fan but the 7-08 converted me. Hopefully I can find ammo that the .270 likes. Good luck.

Yes the SPS is a very good rifle. I have a 7mm-08, a 223 and a 270 and have had several more and as Rammer said the SPS is basically the ADL with a synthetic stock and 24 inch barrels in all the standard calibers. They are inexpensive and shoot very well right from the box. Although I don't need the extra barrels, I sure wouldn't part with these.:DIts hard to improve on the hunting accuracy with rifles that start out shooting one inch and usually half that. If I can put three shots under an inch with several loads then for me, that rifle is done fooling with. I had a ADL Synthetic in 257 Robert that put its first three shots into a big 3/8 inch hole with factory Federal 120 grain Partition ammo.

I must add that I could not do that with any rifle in 300 RUM. But thats just me.;). I guess on second thought I could shoot a very small group with a 300 RUM. One shot group that is.

I bought the Rem 700 SPS in 300 ultra mag, I got it dialed in and took it hunting and killed a nice bull and mule deer. After that I started trying to shoot it a lot at the range, it kicked my skinney ass and was not fun to shoot very many rounds through. I added a muzzle brake and a limbsaver recoil pad, and now it is a pleasure to shoot. I just got the ADL in 270, I'm gonna get to shoot it Sunday, CAN"T WAIT!!!!:D:D

You might not need the muzzle brake. I would shoot it awhile first. Recoil does not bother a lot of shooters like it does me.

i just bought an SPS Varmint in 22-250 with a 26" heavy barrel. havent got to see its true accuracy as of yet....but its got 8 groundhogs in less than a week to its name :D out to 300yds. missed a 600+yarder by mere inches at the most...one day ill shoot it from a bench and see what she got...probably when i get the new scope.

really like it though...good shootin gun

I can pick up the 300RUM for $580 CAD which seems like a good price to me.
My brain is really doing some OT on this decision

My observation about the used SPS's that I have seen is they don't stay black,seen the black stuffcome off and then there is the bare metal --- bolt handle especially.

Right now Canadian money is only 1 cent different than U.S. Money.

So far I have never seen any finish come off my adl or SPS rifles. Not saying it couldn't

I bought an SPS stainless in 30.06 brand new for 479.99 before taxes. It shot very well while sighting it in but by the end of the box of bullets the scope was busted so i never got to really check on how tight the groups are. I will be putting a new scope on soon enough and will finish the finite sighting of the rifle. I love it, the R3 pad works great. I want to say that my SPS stainless is a 26 inch barrel though, not sure, will check for sure.

correction, just the mags come in 26 inch barrels on teh SPS stainless
