Sub-MOA Rifles
How many people actually have a rifle that shoots Sub MOA? IM not talking about the $1500 or $3000 custom rifles. Im talking a factory rifle for under $800 that will consistantly shoot under 1in.

RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
The only rifle I have that does it is a winchester shadow in 270 wsm , 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards
I paid $399 for it , and its stainless , Ive paid lots more for other guns that were half as accurate , a cz and tikka , but they were good values also IMO |
RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
Remington ADL .243shoots .5 - .75" with Federal 100 grain soft points (blue box). $288
Remington 30-06 will shoot under an inch with three different factory loads. $350 Winchester M70 .270 consistantly shoots .75 1" with 130 grain corelokts. Passed down from grandfather. Remington 700 338 ultra mag will shoot right at 1" with Remington 250 grain Swift a-frames. $600 |
RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
Remington 700 ADL 25-06, can shoot consistently under 1" but the right load and a steady rest will put it under 1/2" with hunting loads :). My other 2 centerfires are not under $800 :D

RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
I did it a few times with my remington 700 ADL 30-06. I think the question is more of the ammo and shooter than the rifle with a sub MOA achievement. I now own a savage, winchester mod 70, remington mod 700, and NEF and they all appear to be if not capable, close to capable of sub MOA. I am not consistently capable of MOA however. EJ

RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
I only have 1 rifle i know will shoot Sub-MOA all day long. The rest group between 1in and 2in all day. I have some that will get Sub-MOA a few times but not consistantly. Actually the one i have that shoots the best will stay under 1in at 200 yards. Im am capable of shooting under 1in consistantly but what im shooting depends on how long i can keep my groups like that. Some of my bigger rifles i can only keep good groups for 10 shots or so but smaller rifles i can until i get tired of shooting.

RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
I have 4 SubMOA guns. Only one is stock out of the box however. I had to do work on them to get them to shoot well, and significant load development.
One is a 1980 model heavy varmit edition 7mm-08 700BDL, This is stock as you can get, and I wouldn't hesitate to prove it can shoot subMOA 4 groups out of 5. And I got it from an estate sale for only $250. What a deal |
RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
We have a couple the best is a Ruger #1 25-06 that will put three shots on top of each other.
|
RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
I have only one that will. Winchester M70 Heavy Varmit in .308. When I first got it it shot just a slighly ragged hole. Very slightly. Now it has opened up a lot more.

RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
Every rifle that I have shoots under MOA, or I don't keep them. that being said none of them are as they came from the factory save one and thats a Browning Abolt in 280.A short list of Sub MOA in my cabinet:
1. 338 win mag Rem. 700 = .75-1 MOA 2. 6.5-284 rem 700 custom = .5 MOA 3. 221 FB rem 700 custom= .5 MOa 4. 223 Rem 700 VS= .5 MOa 5. 22-250 cooper Varminter = sub .5 MOA 6. 270 wsm Model 70 winchester (my boys now) = .75-1 MOA 7. 6BR rem 700 custom. = .5 moa at worst All of them have at the very least had a bedding job and trigger job. some have had extensive smith work done. Interestingly, I've seen a lot of 300 RUM shot at our range. It seems that every one of them shoot excellent. I've seen remington 700's, Browning Abolts, and Savages and they all shoot well. It makes me wonder if the RUM Cartridge is inheritly accurate. |
RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
My savage 17HMR is as close as it gets for me. It normally shoots under an inch but sometimes I get a flyer that opens it up to an inch or slightly more.
I don't think I have ever owned a centerfire that would do it consistantly with factory ammo. I don't hand load. Paul |
RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
Most of my scoped bolt action guns .30 caliber and under are capable of one inch three shot groups at 100 yards. Will not have a gun that is not accurate: Got two that are going awaythis weekendfor that reason.
Had to work on all of my rifles. Biggest challenge was myMathieu in .300 Win. Mag.Traded a ragged Winchester 1873 for it in Rockville, MD.It came with a Buhmillerbarrel chambered for .300 Weatherby, a cartridge that i hate.Had the barrel set back and re-chambered for .300 Win Mag.The action hasbeen glass beddedand the barrel floated, it is now a consistent one inch and better gun. Had to develop specific loads for some of my rifles that will not work well in other of my guns in the same caliber. Two of my rifles have Hart barrels and bothconsistently make.5 inch groups in the hands of my Marine NCO friend. |

RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
I have a few,if you find the right load a lot of the factory rifles will shoot some groupsan inch or less at 100 yds.Now if you want consistancy group after group you better go with a custom rifle.
I shoot a lot of rifles and a bunch of differentloads week in and week out, don't own any customs but I get one holers with the reg rifles once in awhile and I am very satisfied.Nothing wrong with custom rifles if I had the money I would have a bunch of them. These groups were shot with factory rifles last week.I have a lot more targets (one holers ) shot with factory rifles including 2 muzzleloaders. Some have been beded, all have the factory triggers but have been adjusted.A couple stocks have been replaced with bell and carlson stocks(a 7/08 rem,and a 270 rem) |
RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
The only completely stock/out-of-the -box gun that I currently own that will do it is my 7-08 Rem. CDL with my own handloads. I have several others that will do MOA or less regularly, but they have all been bedded and load-developed for. Out of the box guns that shoot MOA with factory ammo are about as scarce as the Holy Grail.

RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
The only one I currently own is the Savage 17 HMR, I have other 1" or better shooters but they have all been tweaked. I did have one that was bone stock and shot 1" or betterit was a 700BDL 25-06. After that gun I got spoiled and hence the need for tweaking.
My partner bought a Savage 7mm rem mag this winter (bone stock) and we found 1 loadthat will shoot 1" or less- 140 Nosler BT, handloaded not factory! |
RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
I have three. My Remington Model 7 in .222 will stay well under an inch, my Browning A-bolt .243 will shoot several different loads under an inch. Both of these guns will do .5" for three shots on a good day with their favorite loads. I also have a Browning Stainless Stalker .30-06 that will hold about .6-7" with 150 Nosler Accubonds (3 shots.)

RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
My Savage 10FP .223 shot 1/2 MOA right out of the box with Black Hills Reman 68 gr. MHP. I just put a new stock on it and am going to shoot it this weekend I hope. I would like to see some improvement but for a $515 rifle, it's hard to beat as is.

RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
My Ruger M77MKII target.220 swiftwill do it with hand loads.Only work done to it was a trigger job and fire lap the barrel.

RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
Most of the 700 Remington rifles I have owned, to many to count, would do three shot groups under one inch when the right load was found. I won't give up on a rifle until I have tried every conceivable useful load. Many just take a while to shine or are picky about loads. I have had several custom rifles but none of them were worth what they cost me when it comes to great hunting accuracy. A varmint rifle must shoot a bit better for me than a big game rifle but I am happy with a big game rifle that will do sub one inch groups with good hunting loads. One last thing, they have to put the first shot on the money every time I go out. I am not always capable of great groups but the guns that I keep are. Even if I have to have the wife shoot the group.;)

RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
Below is target that I tried some 155 gr a -maxes,three shot groups,to see which powder it like with them,It is the same tikka out of the box nothing done to it,that I shot the 10 shot group with the 168's.Have shot 150 gr,165gr and 130 gr bullets and it shoot them as good. This is the most accrute rifle I have had including the rem 260.Have a buddie that has 2 of them and both shoot just like this one.He had one of them rechambered to a 30/06 and it shoots also.
These are i inch dots and the middle dot is with a rem 7/08,and the first one on the second row I think was with a rem 22/250. |
RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
I leave in Iowa so all I shoot for rifle is varmmit calibers. I have always felt if you can't get a .223 to shoot sub moa it was a junk rifle. I won't own a .223 long if it won't shoot .5 with handloads, that's just my standard. I have a savage 12fv and a tikka t3 which will both do that above with ease.
|
RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
Both my Tikka's will shoot sub moa's all day. My 308 has grouped everything I've put in it so far. My 300wsm has been a little more finiky. It will still shoots a good group but it won't shoot the barnes triple shocks or accu-bonds as good as it has nosler solid bases and partitions. All factory ammo.

RE: Sub-MOA Rifles
I have a Ruger M77 Mk II in .223 and 300 WSM and both of them will shoot .6 MOA and a #1 in 7x57mm that will shoot .75 MOA. All of them have Elite 4200 scopes and the .223 has a timney trigger and the 300 had a trigger job. Nothing fancy. I have a custom mauser 98 in 30-06 that will touch holes at 100 yards. Nothing particularly special about that one either. I only have about $600 into the gun. I know of about 6 other M77 Mk IIs that my friends and family have and all of them will shoot under 1" at 100 yards.
