Maybe the Mossberg 835 would be a good option, too. It is a pump-action, the 935 is auto-loader, but the Remington 870 would also be great.

I don't think that you would use 2 3/4 inch slugs or turkey loads, since the lightest load you will ever want to use for turkey would be "3, but "3 1/2 is better, gives you more range. Red Dot scope would work good, they're not generally very expensive.

For deer, a plain 2x7 scope, or 3x9x40, would be better than a red dot, but a red dot would still work ok.
Make sure when you get the rifled barrel, you shoot sabot slugs, not rifled, rifled slugs are for smoothbore barrels, sabot are for rifled.

A Mossberg 835 is another choice. The only thing i dont really like with Mossberg guns is that the have alot of recoil. I had an 835 and when i shot 3in slugs it had more recoil then my 300 Ultra Mag. That is the only gun ive had to stop sighting in with for the day. With any other load the recoil wasnt bad so who need 3in slugs anyways. 2 3/4 dose just as good. Now if i could get some 3 1/2in slugs that group well im going to try them. Yes i did state that right i had a few boxes of 3 1/2in sabot slugs. Remington is a fine choice also. Take him to the gunshop and see what fits him best. A 2-7 power scope will be more then enough for deer. I had a 3-9 on m ine and it never went past 4 power and i thought 3 was a little too much at times. Now i have a fixed 4 power on it and it is plenty for out to 100 yards.

Well my suggestion would be to get an 870 special purpose turkey gun, then get a cantilever rifled slug barrel.

However, you don't NEED camo or 3 1/2 inche shells to hunt turkey. If you want to waste the money it feel free, but you don't have to have either to take game.

My buddy has the combo I mentioned above and it works just fine for him.

Oh, and you can shoot a rifled slug just fine out of a rifled barrel. That is what rifled barrels originally used. Sabot loads came out after rifled barrels for the most part. My Ultra Deluxe is very accurate with a few rifled slug loads.

It just makes them really dirty is all and they suck to clean. Wont hurt them at all though if you clean them well when you are done.

The sabots perform better though, so unless you are really broke I don't see any reason not to use them.

well i have a H&R pardner turkey gun that is nice, but it kick like a mule so you would want a slip on recoil pad and it shoo 2 3/4 to 3.5 inch, and i am getting a smoothbore barrel that takes screw in chokes, but they do make fully rifled deer barrels too. just go to hr1871.com and go to guns and if he like one then go to customer support then go to the barrel accessory link and find a another barrel he wants, but if i was going with one the pumps you suggested would have to go with the mossberg the remington it way to expensive and he wouldnt mind a used pump gun he could a get a winchester 1300 there pretty good too.
hope this helps

What I would do is buy the mossberg 835. It shoots 2 3/4's, 3's, and 3 1/2's. Here in Oklahoma academy has them for $238, and it is a great gun. walmart.com sells the rifled barrel with cantilevered scope for $150. It has a bushnell scope....I forget the power but it works great for hogs and deer at 100 yards. Good luck curth83
