Win. M100, .284 or .308??

Have a chance to pic up a Win. Model 100 semiauto. One is in .284 and one in .308. Not sure which I should get. (Please don't say "get both!" or I'll really be in trouble.

I do some handloading and so ammo avalibility is really not a big concern.

Robin in Rocky; where it is snowing and I'll have to shovel off my garden plot so I can finnish planting. Maybe some "snow peas".

May be wrong, but I believe the .284 is a much rarer caliber. In addition, the .284 is an excellent round. Of course, so is the .308. But I believe you can usually find a Model 100 in .308 later if you decide you want one.

If the prices were similar, I'd buy the .284 - but I admit to having a certain prejudice in favor of 7mm cartridges......

Get the .284!!!!!!! I have 4 M-100s, 2 in .308 and 2 in .284. The .284 Winchesteris an awesomeround for deer.

.308 is a great gun, you won't regret that, but if you reload, there's no reason you can't get the .284, it sounds cool, it's a tough choice, but I think the .284 would be cooler since you'll be the only one who has one.

But, the .308 is still a great gun, and has more bullet mass, but I will admit I am .30 caliber inclined, since the .308 is the cartridge I shoot and hunt with.

I would choose the 284. This gun is much more scarce than a 100 in 308. If the gun is pre-64 all the much better. The difference in pre-64 and a later model will the the checkering on the pistol grip and forearm. On the pre-64 it will be checkering and the later model will have a basketweave style. You will know what I'm talking about when you see them.

I'd take the .284 just to be different :D

The 284 is not just "cooler" than the 308, but you get 280 Rem performance out of a short action cartridge. In other words it actually edges out the 308 performance wise. What's not to like?

I would grab the .284 as fast as I could! I love the cartridge and have 2 rifles chambered for it right now. If you don't choose the .284,please let me know so that I may have a chance to buy it.

Get the .284 Win .... way ahead of it's time, and although there are rounds today that do what the .284 Win can do, it's a dandy of a round, and the M100 in .284 Win is worth premium $$$'s.
sweet gun. It's on my dream list, ... that and the Win M88 lever.

Like the others said, grab up the 284. They carry a heavy Premium ($$$$$) here. I have a M100 in 308 and it is a great gun, I'd snatch up a 284 if I had the chance in a heartbeat!

I agree wholeheartedly - get the .284. I'd love to find a 100 in that chambering. They usually bring a premium price as does the .358. The .308 show up regularly at my local gunshop and I put them back on the rack. But if a .284 or 358 show up when I'm there, its going home with me.

Well I guess if I had any doubts at all they are long gone.

If anyone from "Wincherster" were to read this thread they may get the idea that a good deal of the rifle buying folks would stand in line to buy a M100 in .284.

I'll post up a pic of me at the range with my new gun in a few weeks.

Dang... I just checked out the ballistics tables at Winchester's site on the .284. Looks like a heckuva nice little cartridge. With the 150 grain bullet, it shoots flatter than either the .30-06 with a 150 or the 7mm-08 with a 140, and retains energy better than either of them. Makes me wonder whythe .284 isn't more popular.

It's just my opinion, but I think the reason that the .284 never really caught on was because the .284 wasdelevlopedmainly for the M100 and M88.When Winchester stopped making the M100 and M88, they essentially stopped making the .284.Today if it weren't for gunsmiths rebarreling and rechambering existing rifles and custom rifle makers offering the .284,it very well mey have faded away completely.

Or any other rifle in .284, too. Even a Model 70!
