Walmart Walmart that's our store...we shop at Walmart 'cause we poor!!!
Lots of good deals at Walmart, but you should be able to pick up a Marlin 22 just about anywhere for around a 100 bucks. Check out the ads in Sundays paper. Good luck!

Got any gun shops in your area? Often you can get good deals on nice used .22's there. Gun shows are another good source of "pre-owned" guns. Naturally, a good inspection is required, but unless a piece has been totally neglected, a good buy may be made.

How old/big is the boy? If you are looking at youth models you may find some single shots by Rossi or H&R/NEF that fall in that range. Or I think the little Crickets are under 100 bucks. You may find some other single shot bolt actions that cheap as well.
Or like said check out the used racks, nothing wrong with them.
I had a savage youth model bolt action for a while that was pretty nice. I think it ran me around $130 or so without a scope.
Under $100 may take some looking, but add another 50 bucks to that and I think you should be able find something pretty decent.

I got a new in box Mossberg 702 Plinkster wih a 4x32 scope mounted and boresighted for $99!! The accuracy of this gun is very impressive for the price and mine has been 100% reliable. Walmart near me usually carries these.

Thanks guys, I've checked out all the different brands you mentioned since I read these posts and the Mossberg seems like the best deal so far. I am leaning toward trying to get a cheaper used one first though if I can so I'm checking the classifieds from the Sunday paper and will be hitting the gun shows at my local Gibralter trade center next month. If it comes down to new then I'll probably be leaning to the Mossberg 802 plinkster. Thanks again!

I would strongly suggest checking local pawn shops for used bolt actions or single shots. The main reason for this is to instill a make 1 shot count mentality which can seldom be later taught as easily if they arestarted with a semiauto. I know this from experience of teaching dozens of new shooters as well as my own learning era.
